TOPIC: ISSUE61 - "High-profile awards such as the Nobel Prize are actually damaging to society because they suggest that only a few people deserve such recognition."
WORDS: 503 TIME: 00:50:00 DATE: 2010-5-13 2:03:13
Are high-profile awards such as the Nobel Prize damaging to society? As I concede, although only a few people could deserve such recognition, it is still beneficial to the society as a whole to keep those awards.
To begin with, high-profile awards are necessary to affirm the outstanding contributions that the scientists have made to the society. Those who did all their efforts to researches and obtained breakthrough in their fields should get corresponding respect from the society. For example, Maria Curie won the Nobel Prize because of her isolation of pure Radium, which made an enormous contribution to the human beings as a whole not only in her age, but also at the moment and in the future. There is no doubt that she should win the high-profile award to affirm her success in science and her contributions to the human beings.
Moreover, those who could not won high-profile awards could realize their disadvantages in their own research. After they find those disadvantages, they would try to catch up with the award winners, and to some extend it could cause a competition in scientific realm, which would help to improve the efficiency of the scientists and scholars. If that happens, the academic field would be impacted by Catfish effect. As we know, Catfish effect is a phenomenon that the strong competitors could better the weaker ones. If that would take place in academic and other fields, the efficiency would be obviously improved. Thus, the high-profile awards are benefit to the society as a whole.
In addition, whether winning the high-profile, such as the Nobel Prize and the Oscar, does not depress the influence of scientists, political leaders, or movies. Take Gandhi as an illustration, he used to be nominated five times by the Noble prize, however, unfortunately, he was always just one step from the final win. Though he did not win the Nobel peace award in his lifetime, he was still one of the greatest political and spiritual leaders in history. Another example, in 2009, a movie called Avatar was widely praised all around the world and was nominated in the Oscar award that year. Unfortunately, Avatar lost the competition of winning the best movie of the year. But, the lost did not prevent the movie gaining the best box office in history; moreover, the lost even improve the movie's charm of pity.
On the other hand, the government and some certain organizations should focus on and sponsor not only the researches of the high-award winners, but also those who could not be the top ones in their fields. At the moment, governments always fail to drill the potentials of some researches that may not have any opportunities to compete for the high-profile awards, such as the basic education researches, etc.
In sum, high-profile awards are always beneficial to the society as a whole, even though only a few people deserve such recognition. However, those who could not win those awards should not be forgotten by the society. |
