"The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."

I don't agree with that point when the value of history studying is confined to our daily lives. As a matter of fact, it is studying history as the whole people that brings our people much power to advance, as it does to enhance their personal qualities.


First of all, as a historian says, “A people, ignoring its history, will definitely be abandoned by history”, which means a people who forget its history can't learn some lessons from its past to stop the same tragedy happen again. Looking back, we can find that Hitler seems to forget what had happened just few years back, canceled the Versailles Treaty, expanded his army enormously and launched World War II to fight the rest of world, regardless of other countries' oppositions. Although he could achieve victories of some battles, yet he was doomed to failure compared to the rest of world with infinite power. History saw again that a dictator, who ignored his history, was ending up in suicide and failure of his dream of the powerful Third Empire. As a result, the German had suffered from postwar trial and consequence for many years after Hitler’s unconditional surrender. In terms of his tragedy, we can conclude that it can cause disastrous effect if a people forget its past, and learning history well and thus preventing
history from repeating itself, in a way ,have value.

Secondly, no matter what job you are engaged with, how much wealth you own and how skillful you are in certain aspects, you may be humiliated by others, if you don't or wouldn't learn history. The reason is that our society has regarded studying history more or less as the basic course for someone who wants to be noble. Studying history doesn’t matter much for people who struggle for life. However, someone, seeking relatively upper social status, should have a good knowledge of history. For instance, in a TV show, a famous Chinese singer couldn't answer the question how many years the Second World War last in China and thus was criticized by the public as a traitor; therefore, she was claimed to apologize for her ignorance. After that, her movies and songs were rejected by the majority in China. For this matter, studying history stands for much more value than what she could imagine.

Thirdly, we cannot deny that studying history has value when it comes to our daily lives. When we consult the history book or classics, we can find so many valuable and meaningful words from our ancestors, which direct us to choose the right way to go forward. Take myself as an example; when my friends and I feel distressed in our daily life, like a failure in the exam or breakup with girlfriends, we often ask our ancestors for help by reading some history books. These books usually serve as a match that lights my latent power and encourage us to confront the setback, experience the difficulties, and finally gain success. Undoubtedly, history is a resource of energy for everyone who has learned or is learning it to deal with the daily affairs.




To sum up, studying history can bring us so much value in many aspects, such as learning some lessons to prevent the nation repeating the same mistake, improving individuals' personal quality and offering us spiritual shelter when we are tired. Therefore, I don’t need to push my imagination to see what a mess it would be for both individuals and society without a good understanding of its history.
