131 The arts (painting, music, literature etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.





As embellishment and as creation of object beyond the most basic need of living,art has accompanied man since the prehistoric times. Just like language and social organizations ,art is essential to man. It reveals the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Certain spectrum of feeling and thought can not be expressed by any other means than art. To thoroughly understand the such significance of art , one may approach it from different angles.

In the first place, art vent the suppressed  ideals , inspires us to accomplish them,and consequently reveal the impulses of a society. by means of artistic expression ,art perfectly delineate the ideals hidden in the bottom of our heart, as an old saying goes: art is the distillation of life. For example, the world would never be the same once you have seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump.”life is like a box of chocolate , you never know what you are gonna get.” Just like the movie itself, this line from Forrest Gump became a instant classical motto and a inspiration to  million of people worldwide. Of course many people have to farewell their dreams after a try or after they bear the burden of life due to intellectual or influential factors. In such circumstances,art works provide us with the response to our biological and psychological needs to cherish our dream in the bottom of our heart ,and to soak up the perseverance and creativity of the heros in the  movie ,literature ,or any other form of art works.

In the second place, some kind of art works such as movies, caricatures ,satirical essays contribute to the exposure of acute and chronic social issues. The sensitive issues such as the problems related to the injustice to women, children abuse, caste system etc need to be dealt with great care to understand the consequence and seriousness of them. Regarding the chronic problems, although they are not having vehement impact on our daily life, if not properly resolved or at least put under control , they are likely to grow into the fatal cancer of our society. The satirical arts relentlessly expose the illness and the goodness by classifyig the attitudes towards them into two categories: admiration, even downright adulation on the one side; skepticism, even downright distain on the other side.

Last but not the least,by virtue of capacity to embody symbolic significance to their audience, arts manage to nurture and reveal a state or habit of mind in which trust and confidence is placed including religious belief and great devotion to certain person and idea. For example, the five-starred Red flag,the national flag of China, signifies the assiduousness and braveness of the Chinese people and reveals the patriotic feeling hidden in the bottom of their heart. On the other hand , the dramatic and emotional impact of religion derive its use of  art. Religious rituals everywhere include song and dance performances ,visual arts function to heighten the  emotional component of  religious experience,by portraying important scenes and symbols from the religious history and mythology.

Thus, the arts provide a platform to express the pent up emotions and latent thoughts. It is difficult to imagine a world without arts.
