In this memo, the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center concludes that consumers are more likely to grow vegetables on their own. The arguer also draws a conclusion that expanding the kinds of vegetable seeds will enable them to profit more. To bolster the conclusion, the arguer provides the evidence that the national survey last month indicates the dissatisfaction of the consumers towards the vegetables in the supermarkets. In addition, the arguer also provides the fact that a gardening magazine has sold out for three months. While clearly examining the evidences, we may find that they lead little support to the final conclusion.

In the first place, the result of the national survey last month cannot reflect the actual situation in the suburban town. Since the consumers’ dissatisfaction all over the country does not necessary indicate the aptness of consumers in the suburban town. Even if many consumers of the town are really dissatisfied with the fresh vegetables in the supermarkets, the result is too vague, for the arguer does not offer the number and the proportion of the consumers who are dissatisfied. Even if the majority of the consumers in the town are dissatisfied with the fresh vegetables in the supermarkets, it does not indicate that these consumers will no longer buy vegetables in the supermarkets or began to buy less. Maybe they are just complaining but will not change their former habit of purchasing. After all, to grow vegetables on one’s own is quite a time-consuming and difficult job, so even the citizens are not satisfied, they may not have time or the skills to care the vegetables they grow.

In the second place, the fact that the magazines are sold out for three months does not necessary indicate the consumers are more interested in growing vegetables. It is possible that in the past three months, the economic conditions in the town is better than before and people have more time to buy things like magazines. Because the sale conditions of other magazines are unknown, maybe all the magazines are sold better than before. It is also possible that the magazine buyers just want to enjoy the attracting pictures in the magazines or may want to grow some flowers rather than vegetables.

In the third place, even assuming that the consumers are prone to grow vegetables on their own, the suggestion by the owner of green Thumb Gardening Center may not increase their profits. By increasing the kinds of vegetable seeds may not attract more consumers since consumers are probably apt at buying certain kinds of vegetables seeds. It is equally possible that consumers prefer to grow flowers rather than vegetables. Thus without the information concerning what on earth the consumers are inclined to grow, we cannot evaluate whether they will make more profits by expanding the variety of vegetable seeds.

To sum up, the conclusion that consumers are more interested in grow vegetables on their own is ungrounded. And the suggestion to expanding the kinds of vegetable seeds may make little contribution to the increase of profits. To bolster the conclusion, the arguer should have a survey in the suburban town. The survey should gather accurate responses from citizens about their preference, to grow vegetables on their own or buy them in the supermarkets. Besides, the information concerning what kind of vegetable seeds in more attractive must be offered.

In this memo, the owner seems get a correct conclusion and finds a quite good way to increase the profits of Green Thumb Gardening Centre through the evidence cited. To prove that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables, the writer cited two examples, but through the analysis of them below, we will be aware that more investigation and proof is needed to seek a better method to increase the profit.

In the first example, the writer infers that the local consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of the vegetables sold in the supermarkets from a survey conducted nationwide. However, the nationwide data cannot be used to explain the local people’s attitude toward the vegetables. Maybe in this suburban town, there are some farmers cultivating vegetables and sell them to the residents; or, the local supermarket offers vegetables of good quality. In these cases, the local people don’t need to grow their own vegetables at all.

The second example about the local conditions says that one gardening magazine has sold out at the village news stand three months in a row. From the name of magazine: Great Gardens, we can only know that it is about gardening and the owner offers no credible evidence showing that the reason why people try to buy this magazine is they are interested in the knowledge contained about cultivating vegetables in one’s own garden. The case that the local people are always keen on gardening and planting is highly likely to lead to the hot sale of this magazine.

Neither of the two examples succeeded to demonstrate that the interest of growing vegetables is increasing in this town. Moreover, even if we assume that this case set up, expanding the variety of vegetables seeds will not necessarily increase the profit because the consumers are probably fond of several kinds of vegetables, while without more investigation, what kinds of vegetables the people are interested in remains unknown. Thus, expanding the variety of vegetables seeds might make no sense because this will only offer more choices for the consumers other than more seeds they really need in their gardens.

In conclusion, the owner’s memo is not persuasive. If the business wants more profit in this aspect, they must make the survey directed toward the local market and the consuming psychology of residents to ensure which stock they should expand to prepare.
