TOPIC: ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
WORDS: 725 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2010-6-4 0:47:08
I concede that how children are socialized could influence the destiny of society; however, the speaker overstates the effects of the socialization of children, since the destiny of society is determined by several factors rather than solely socialization of children. As to the second assertion, I deem that the speaker understate the endeavor and achievements which human beings have already gained in education.
To begin with, socialization plays a necessary role during the process of education. As we know, the term of socialization refers to the processes of learning one’s culture and lives within it. Becoming socialization is benefit to both individuals and the society as a whole: for the individuals, it provides the necessary resources to live and orient themselves correctly in society. To be specific, on the way to socialization, a girl may correctly learn how to be a daughter, a friend, a wife, and a mother; for the society, the culture and conventions would attain continuity with the individuals learning its values and moralities. In contrast, without socialization, people may not fuse themselves into the society with established principles; they may have troubles in interacting with the surroundings and fail to shoulder their responsibilities which they should take. In this sense, schools and society should place adequate emphasis on socializing children.
However, socialization does not necessarily mean the determination of the society's destiny. Those who are well socialized may not act as people expected; moreover, they may even disturb the harmony of society. Adolf Hitler is a well known and powerful illustration. He was perfect at oration and always told people what they wanted to hear. His lecture was full of passion and agitating that resulted in his elected as the leader of Nazi Party at that time. Hitler was well socialized, to some extend. However, he did determine the destiny of the whole world but not in the way the speaker deems. He encouraged fascism, invaded European countries and killed millions of innocent Jewish civilians. Thus, well-socialization is not equal to the wonderful destiny of society. On the other hand, those who are not well socialized may also enormously contribute to the prosperities of human beings. To be specific, Steven Hawking was paralyzed when he was very young, which led his disability in walking and talking. In this sense, he seemed isolated by society, and could not continue to survive, let alone contribute to human beings. Nevertheless, the truth told us that he could go on his scientific researches on quantum gravity and the big bang theory which are considered the most important and difficult branches in physics. Thus, whether the children are socialized or not does not inevitably lead to the corresponding results as people expected.
Actually, several other facts, such as wars, natural disasters and so forth, may also exert the function of affecting the destiny of society. For example, the Black Death killed millions of people during the medieval age, and the destiny was not decided by the levels of socialization of people, but the infection of the terrible disease. Even eliminating those external and inevitable factors, there are still other aspects deep in human nature, such as Steven Hawking's persistence and Adolf Hitler's avarice. Thus, the determination of society's destiny could not be simply defined the effects of children's socialization.
When it comes to the second assertion, I could not agree the speaker at all. There is no denying that how to cultivate children that could help bring about better societies would be a complicated and sophisticated task; however, we could not overlook the progress and achievements that human beings have already obtained during the last thousands of years. Just look back in history, people could easily find that human beings were always advancing from the ancient Greece to the modern USA: in political realm, feudalism no longer existed; in scientific realm, people could enjoy convenient life with the help of high-tech; in the arts realm, people could enjoy more forms of arts. In a word, due to the progress of education, the society as a whole could get pleasure from the beneficial byproducts.
In sum, socialization of children is essential in education, however, we could not overstate its effects. Moreover, due to human being's endeavors from generations to generations, people are always improving the capacities of breeding the young children to bring out a better society. |
