Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress.

The speaker asserts that discovery or progress can there only be made through mistakes. I agree with speaker’s contention for two reasons. First, it is well-known that science is improving by mistakes all the time. Secondly, history that we human create us tells us that our society is advancing with errors.

First of all, the assertion accords with the development of science. Once upon a time, people convinced that the sun travels around the earth, which is indeed wrong in our opinion now. Later, some scientists like Copernicus to question the so-called “fact”. And along with endeavor of many scientists, people tend to admit the opposite view that the earth travels around the sun in fact. Another example is Thomas Alba Edison, who is considered the one of the greatest inventors or even greatest one. After his failing again and again, inventions of great importance appear and are used in our daily life. From his experience, we can learn that failure may be a key to success.

Secondly, mistakes lead to advancement of our society throughout history. Consider, for example, industrialization dramatically benefits our life, but unfortunately, it has damaged our living condition at the same time. Industrialization created a lot of fortune, thus people only pay attention to economic in spite of the environment that was getting worse. Now we have to pay a heavy price for our stupid mistakes. Air is not fresh any longer and we are forced to endure the global warming which is endangering our living environment. So an increase number of people and countries begin to value the importance of environment protection. And more and more laws are enacted to enhance our living condition all over the world. From what has been discussed above, development of both science and society may need mistakes.

However, are mistakes the “only” way can there be discovery and progress? I don’t think so. According to our own experience, we are motivated to spend more time on study after being praised and then get better grades. Moreover, we are willing to do what interests us, and so with the scientists, their interests may contribute greatly to discovery. These situations can easily prove that mistakes are not the only way leading to discovery and progress.

In sum, the speaker’s assertion is not absolutely correct that “only” through mistakes can there be discovery and progress. And based on my statement , we may safely draw the conclusion that it is not only mistakes but also the factor can be conducive to discovery or progress such as praise and interests.
