TOPIC: ARGUMENT6 - The following was written as a part of an application for a small business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe.

"A jazz music club in Monroe would be a tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the local market all to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. Finally, a nationwide study indicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money."

Primarily, the number of people attended the Monroe's jazz festival last summer cannot lend any support to the conclusion that the local Monroe residents are fond of jazz music. Maybe, the majority of people who attended the festival are crazy fans from other towns which are very far away. Even if there are a lot of local people attended the festival, it is still problematic to draw the conclusion that jazz music is popular in Monroe. Maybe, the local people just wanted to feel the atmosphere of the festival; perhaps the festival was free to the audience which was attractive to the local people. Even if the local people are fond of the jazz music, the fact that several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe does not help to prove the C Note club would be profitable in the future. Maybe, the musicians are always going to play music out the town and even out of the country instead of always being at home; maybe they are not musicians who like show in clubs. Since the author fail to provide any evidence to prove all above, he/she could not draw the conclusion that the club would be profitable.

Next, the fact that the radio program 'Jazz Nightly' is the highest-rated in Monroe does not necessarily mean that the C Note club would be popular and profitable. Actually, it is possible that the residents of Monroe are more likely to listen to the jazz music at home through the radio, rather than go to the club, which may be the reason to explain why there is no other jazz music club in Monroe. Moreover, even assuming that the local people are interested in the C Note club, they may not want to spend 1,000 dollars on jazz entertainment. The statistic in the memo is open to doubt in my opinion. The statistic indicated by the nationwide study in the memo is not representative among the situation in Monroe. There is no evidence to verify that the jazz music fans in Monroe would also spend that much money on jazz entertainment. Perhaps, the local people may not even spend one dollar on jazz music since there are so many free ways to enjoy the jazz music, such as downloading music from the Internet, listening to the radio, and even borrowing CDs from library. Thus, this assumption is not convincing at all.

Additionally, even if the local jazz music fans would spend 1,000 dollars in C Note club; that is not to say the club would be necessarily profitable. The arguer fail to provide any statistics of the local real estate price, the local salary, the tax rate and the electricity fees which could affect the profit on a vital way. As a result, the conclusion that the club will be profitable is ridiculous and absurd as I concede.
