The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.
"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."

ISSUE：
Even though we live in present when various of new phenomenon or things emerge, I firmly believe that yesterday is a necessary ladder for today, which means Without the foundation of the past, the so-called “today” can’t be built. Therefore, the past shouldn’t be overlooked, on the opposite, I propose that more or less experiences can be gained from it and helpful for guiding our current behaviors.
I admit today is so much new and complex in deed. However, if we carry  futher analysis on these unexpected phenomenon or things, we will find there do exist many similarities between the past and the present, apart from their different appearances, the core nature of them is almost the same. For instance, no matter what era we live, people always need to communicate with each other, whereas the language is updating everyday. Without knowing the old Greek word “polis” which means “city-state” in that age, modern people can hardly understand the meaning of the the word “politics”, which derives from “polis” and contains an implication about “public affairs”. Obviously , some of the new things is derived from the old time, so the past is needed in understanding the new present.
As for those phenomenons or things which doesn’t derived from the past, the prior experience is also a necessary and valuable reference for the current. The technology of clone is a good example to illustrate it. As a newly-developped technology, cloning a person is critical academically and morally. The debate about wether scientists should clone a person is more and more fierce. At the complex point, taking the past’s thoughts and disciplnes into consideration can help us figure it out better. That’s too say, it’s essential for us to define this cloning in some way according to prior moral value system more or less, otherwise the society will come into a disordered situation.
In addition, even the past’s experience is not so positive and can’t provide some beneficial reference for the present, its negative effects are also necessary as warnings. nuclear weapons is my example. Everyone knows that during the second world war, the nuclear weapons brought serious catastrouph for Japan. It let all people realize that no matter how complex disputes are in morndern world, nuclear weapsons shouldn’t be a tool to make use of .
To sum up, natural and solid connections exist between the past and the present. Forgetting the past ways means missing important signs during walking  on the present road. Even today is full of new things or phenomenon, looking back for an understanding of the past is a necessary step to haddle with the current issues.

[/url]It is quite true that we currently use highly developed skills and equipments instead of out-date ways because we live in a new and complex world. It might be temping to accept that comprehension and looking back for the past is meaningless and provides little guidance for modern human beings. However, I do not agree with the speaker in this assertion which totally vetoes the value of past things for the reasons as follows.

First of all, history is a teacher who has helped us learn the experiences of some certain social problems. Make a general view of human’s long history, time had never stopped and things happened in the past were relevant to the ones that happened today, thus we cannot analysis one problem insolated. Just as Francis Bacon-a famous British philosopher-once said: “histories make men wise.’’, what the most precious thing we can get from our ancestors is experience which leads us to a road with little sinuation and avoids us repeating the same mistakes. Take Newton as an example, just as he said: “if I can see further than the others, it is by standing on the shoulder of the giants.” It is well known that Newton discovered the theorem of gravity is based on lots of people’s astronomical observations and Kepler’s three laws of planetary. With taking fully advantages of ancestors’ experience, our society step forward.

Admittedly, history is a mirror which reflected many special periods which including the previous living ways, level of productivity and even cultural backgrounds. As a notable and necessary part of whole human development, history still plays a significant role to our people living far away from the ancient times, especially the archeologists. By studying the military science hundreds years ago we could conclude that wars were happened during that period and at the same time, ancestors’ wisdom expressed vividly, through exploring into the pyramids in Egypt, we get realization of ancient civilization of Egypt whose history occurred in a series of stable kingdoms, and by means of researching on dinosaurs’ fossil, we know that dinosaurs were real existed creatures and Earth has been dominated during a long time. To say with no exaggeration, our current life may lose colors and boring if scientists do not study history and provide us so much interesting information that is out of date.

In addition, history is always a siren which alarms us that there are still many certain social problems, they were and are existed. Violence, poverty and drugs are as serious as previous , and they will be in the future, we can solve these problems with an angular of history instead of hasty solutions.

To sum up, in terms of how to live together as a society I concede that studying the past is of some value. Though historical lesson seems to be as old as history itself, we cannot refuse to learn to from our bright ancestors.

Every morning, we wake up, facing a new world, the complex world, what is our  habitual movement? Most of us look back to make sure what is our plan, and then we change our plan while dealing carefuly new problems, and then make a new plan. So what we are doing in the present base on the past. That means I do not completely agree we the given statement saying that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living the present.
I agree with the  statement in that today is new and complex in the sense that everything is changing in the blink of an eye. What's happening is different from that in the past, so we can not always premit us to cling to our past views, that is to be far-sighted based on current situation.
However, to know better about the current situation, we have to base on the past, since the current situation tells us what is happening and the past tells us why and how that is happening. Historical cognition helps to have a adequate realization of ins and outs of matters in the present, so we always standing on the base of the past and exploring the reason and result of the present.
What looking back gives us includes the ability to deduce what is going to happen. With basic of the past, we can aquare judgements of what is close at hand like imminent danger. Looking back, we may conclude the interior and the exterior rules of the developments and grasp the direction of developing. That helps us to prevent making mistakes and minimizing damages and promoting development. The invention of seismograph is an example of scientifically using historical laws. So the more we respect the past, the better we do in the present and also in the future.
Some people may feel confused in front of the new and complex present, and fail to discover what is best to do at present only to ilustrate that looking back provides little. Since a person with confused ideas is incapable of serious reflection and he or she is at a loss as to what to do. Experts' suggestion for this situation is always looking back and there is an old saying "Looking Back, we are filled with pride; looking into future, we are full of confidence"
To sum up, in terms of how to live in the present, I agree that the present is new and complex, and history provides us lessons to refer and research, placed enough importance, we will acquire enough to cope with problems in the present.
