"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."

In this argument, the arguer concludes that Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors in order to avoid the employment rate continuing to decrease. To substantiate the conclusion, the arguer points out that since the beginning of the evaluation, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent, which made potential employers believe the grades at Omega are inflated. In addition , the argue cites the example of the data from nearby Alpha University. However, a careful examination of this argument would reveal how groundless it is.

First of all, the argument is based on a false analogy. The arguer simply assumes that overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent resulted from the student evaluation of professors, but he does not provide any evidence that providing high marks to appeal the students is the reaction of professors who were evaluated. Compared to the method of increasing the score directly , professors could have more reasonable ways to improve their images among the students , such as teaching in a humor way or increasing the interaction between students and professors. According to that, we can not establish warranted analogy between them. So we cannot safely assume that.

Secondly, the author unfairly assumes that graduates can’t find the job bears some relation to inflated grades. As we know, the employers never put the grades at first, instead, they value the employees’ abilities the most, which include the comprehension, analysis, the skills in reporting progress or problems in their writing and the ability to direct other workers. What’s more, the character and personality of the employer should be the important aspect to be tested, the villain with the high degree can’t receive any good offer as well.

Further more, the arguer commits a fallacy of hasty generalization. Like the coin has its two sides, the evaluation system is also beneficial in some circumstances. That it made professors more positive treat the class and be more patient facing with the questions form the students. Moreover, it improves the students’ status, which makes them feel respected and motivate student dedicated to their academic. Without ruling out these benefits and other possible factors, the author cannot confidently conclude that the student evaluation of professors should be cancelled.

In summary, this argument is not persuasive as it stands. To make it more convincing, the arguer would have to provide more evidence concerning the reasons why the system of the student evaluation of professors affects the employment rate or find a better way to deal with that.
