Issue 40 "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

Is it more significant to concern more about scholars and researchers pursing their individual interests than their work makes a contribution to the larger society? As far as I am concerned, I do concede the view that focusing on research and study which contribute a lot to the larger society is necessary, so as the seeking for personal interests. However, I take some exception when it comes to the interests that seem unusual or idiosyncratic for some study purely pursuing interests may cause serious social problems.

On one level, it is reasonable for public to judge the a scholar or researcher by evaluating his/her contribution to the society where we lived, there is no denying the fact that the final goal of scientific and technological development or any other means of development should be bettering human’s current life and improving living quality. No matter how wonderful and successful when some modern authors described in their works which reflects nothing to do realism and very close to their interests, these illusory works will not last long and disappear with days going by. What benefit do these researches or study bring to us? Thus, evaluating a work whether makes contribution to society or not is needed.

On the other, individual interests regarded as stimulant plays a notable role in achieving success. As we know, the road lead to finding truth is sinuous and filled with difficulty and fault, no one can walk to the end if with no strong will and real interest. Take Brother Greens as an example, before them the society do not believe that there may be any way human beings could fly and even treated this idea as crazy and mad thoughts, however, Greens made it possible since the plane was their dream machine that they would never stop pursuing. Without such enthusiasm and interests, maybe we human beings do not have any idea about flying today. What is more, through individual interests can one find his/her characteristics in some certain fields, in this way, it makes us benefit a lot in taking full advantages of talent and doing deep research.

Notwithstanding interests is an important factor that should be concerned when researcher and scholars do their study, we still cannot ignore the side effect that pursuing unusual and idiosyncratic interests may bring about. Some researchers are interested in strange things which somehow go against general moral, I could not help doubting what benefit do this study may take in. With development of technology and scientific skills, pollution has become an increasing serious problem all over the world, it seems that research has broken the balance between human society and eco system. In my view, any study based on the sacrifice of environment is not a wise option and we should take measures to avoid. Additionally, cloning technology which leads to confusion of social moral and devalue human life, bring more drawback than advantages. If one scientist sticks with studying it and regardless of social critics, a clone one may replace his position sooner or later.

To sum up, we may successfully arrive the point that the researchers and scholars are encouraged to pursue their interests, but not without limit. At the same time, the contributions they made for the society have to be considered in evaluating them. What is more, those interested in the researches going against the benefits of society not only should be discouraged, but also denounced.
