Early in the 20th century, a newinvention has extended the meaning of "Seeing is believing" to abroader scope, in which incident could be stored for later review with exactlysame scenery. This gadget’s new form, in the 21st century, has aname called video camera, which may not be stored by film, but by digit. Andits usage nowadays can be shared among ordinary people who can afford fewhundred dollars to make a record of whatever they want.
Accurately and vividly as it may perform, videocamera does has certain merits which other kind of medium can’t compare with. Byproviding us with the most direct visual and audio presentation to certainevents, video camera can be considered as an incremental and unprecedented devicefor people to recapture the past and store the present. When reading the books,we can imagine the scenery of Martin Luther King address about his classicalspeech—“I have a dream”. Yet, when watching the documentary film of the veryscenery, that grand scenery where thousands of people cheering and screamingmay beyond our imagination and would be much more inspiring to us.
In deed, video camera can offer us accurateand conniving record of contemporary life.
Yet a conclusion states that it isunquestionably superior to written record seems hasty and ill-conceived. Videocamera indeed empowers people to film what they see and what they want to sharewith others, irrespective of time and place, or even party and dictatorship. Ithas become a blessing to scrutinize authority’s misbehaviors and misleading.During the 1989 TianAn Men marssacar, thousands of students fought against thetyranny of government and sadly been repressed by tanks and guns. Without thehelp of video camera, the following generations could barely grasp as muchinformation as possible if this event were only documented by words. Thewritten words describing how people were killed were less direct than videocamera displaying tanks driving above the young student body.
On the other hand, written records, to someextent, have the magic of imagination, which is also one of its merits. Whenreading novels, our imaginations soar and always go beyond the boundary of whatwe can see from films. When it comes to the work of documentation, nevertheless, words could not completely present the vivid picture of certainevent. After all, human beings are such animals which prefer colorful movingmotions and sounds.
Medium, be it written record or radio, be itfilm or video camera, are in themselves neither superior nor inferior in the formof documentation. Just like flowers, one can never make the universal proofthat rose is much better than lily, since both of them add to the beauty ofland, and each of them has specific aroma and shape to make them unique. Each mediumhas specific edge too; written documentation is proved to be the best form topresent thoughts and ideas, to interpret meanings and evoke readers to imagine.Video camera, on the other hand, could be an authentic form of documentation torecapture the happened event for future historian to explore.
By comparing the two means of documentation,we seems to place all the fame and blame to technology, while neglecting theobjectivity of messages carried through these forms and the creators who behindthese media. The speaker might give us a false or veneer image that documentcould be more accurate and true if it were documented by video camera. Any new mediumthat seems to add to the accuracy of documentation might actually add to theinaccuracy of the document, which ironically, falls to the manipulation ofinterest-groups or certain showcase project. Images can be retouched bysettings and new technology. Those who wield video camera can decide what toshoot and what to neglect. Different interest-groups might present us opposite videosof what happened during the Tibetan riot in 2008; the Chinese government denouncedthe subversive in showing the injury of policemen; youtube may release others videostelling us that local policemen suppressed the minority groups by guns andweapons. Then, in the eyes of historian, who are telling the truth?
For better orworse, information, both authentic and forged, would swamp anyone who wants toknow something. Media, both new and old, would convey what they are told to.And we, as the receiver of information, have to be skeptic about what we see. Don’tbelieve all we hear and all we see might be the newly motto to deal with the ‘WeMedia” world. |
