The speaker claims that we can know much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearances and behaviors of its people, for the reason that the way people look, dress and act reveals their attitudes and interests.
In general, I concede that observing the appearance and behavior of its people is a necessary way to study a society's ideas and values. However it is not sufficient that only through the two factors to learn completely about a society.

To begin with, most people intend to dress according their appetites and interests. For examples, the fans of football tend to dress a T-shirt with football star. People who are crazy about the Hip-Pop music tent to wear baggy jeans which are the contemporary Hip-Pop fashion. In fact, the dress reflects the life purposes what one pursues. The people’s life purposes are a very important indication of a society’s ideas and values. Therefore, we can tell much about a society’s values by observing the appearance.

Secondly, through by observation of the behavior of its people, we can learn much about a society’s ideas and values. Take the attitudes to praise for example, when being complimented, an English-speaking person would readily accept the compliment by saying something like “Thank you” to show his appreciation of the praise, while a Chinese speaker would try to deny the truth of the compliment. This social phenomenon can tell us something about the different cultural values that Chinese advocate collectivism and individuals will be modesty toward praise, while in west the society encourage individualism and individuals can show themselves freely.

Besides on the basis of observation of the way people dress and behavior in order to acquire attitudes and values of people and society, there are many other ways can contribute it. As far as I concerned, we can know a society’s ideas and values by learning its history and reading literary works of it. For one thing, any nation’s history expresses their cultural traditions, popular tastes, the democracy and equality of the environment and arts and so forth, which would reflect the society’s ideas and values. For the other thing, reading literary works is also a good way to understand a society’s ideas and values. Because literary works usually record many common people’s everyday lives by which we can particularly survey a society’s ideas. The knowledge from reading literary works is also more profound and entire than from observation of a few of people. For instance, we can understand the American Spirit profoundly by reading the Hemingway’s novel <the old man and sea> which cannot be acquired in a short time observation.

In summary, the way people dress and conduct could reveal the attitudes and interests in some extent. Moreover the observation of people’s behavior is also an efficient way to learn much about a society’s ideas and values. However, the two approaches are not enough to learn a society completely which need more methods such learning its history and reading its literary works and so on.

写得最纠结的一篇issue了。没有限时，还查了很多材料，再写够500多一点。
不得不承认，关于社会，文化，和文学方面的例子还是太少了。要好好整理一下。

另外，写这篇文章感觉修锐老师的，搭桥法还真管用，要说明A->C，只需要说A->B再说明，B->C 通过某种关系与C 相关，便可以说明A->C

In general, I concede that observing the appearance and behavior of its people is a necessary way to study a society's ideas and values. However it is not sufficient that only through the two factors to learn completely about a society.
