I fundamentally with the speaker that thearts indeed reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. However, byadopting the term of ‘otherwise’, the speaker implies that without arts theseideas and impulses cannot manifest themselves, to which I would like to takeexception.
To begin with, the arts could render helpto reveal the hidden and dark side of a society. The authority and governmentalways try to conceal it and the general public has few opportunities to see itwith their own eyes. For instance, Repin's world famous painting- Barge Haulerson the Volga depicts a cruel picture that eleven barge haulers were workingvery hard on the beach of the Volga. The painting is intended a highlycondemnation of the inhumane labor which could not always be seen by thepublic. Another two examples, Mark Twain's world famous novel-- Running forGovernor reveals the hypocritical nature of the so-called election indemocratic institution which is often concealed by the authorities andgovernments. By appreciating these artworks, civilians could find the hiddenside of a society easily.
Moreover, the arts could also help peopleto capture the moment that would elapse in a minute and the beauty that peoplealways overlook in their daily life. Artists could use their specific artistryto realize these aims. To be specific, the well known painting-- lady with aparasol painted by Claude Monet successfully depicts an elegant and gorgeouslady with a parasol standing on the field. Perhaps even the lady herself didnot notice the beautiful scenery without the help of Monet. One more instance, the French post-impressionist Vincent Van Gogh's painting-- Sun Flower helpspeople who are living in the city and have few opportunities to see the realsun flowers to appreciate the flowers standing for optimistic. Without theinspirations and efforts of those artists, people would never note the elapsingbeauty and the special plants that they would never see in their life. Inaddition, some nonmainstream arts such as rock'n roll, hiphop and so forthcould help people to notice the hidden ideas of young people. Youngsters showtheir true feelings including happiness, anger, sorrow, respect, etc by thespecial styles of music. By listening to and appreciate the lyrics and beats ofthese songs, adults would find the hidden feeling that they could notunderstand directly.
What's more, some literature would alsoplay a crucial role in enlightening a revolution. The authors reveal the hiddenimpulses through words and sentences in their books. To be specific, Karl Marxwrote the book-- the Communist Manifesto which was later regarded the mostprecious and enlightening literary work that direct people to pursue communism. The masterpiece written by Karl Marx described the communism systematically andindicates the worldwide tide of communism.
However, by using the word 'otherwise', thespeaker implies that only through art works, can those hidden ideas andimpulses manifest themselves, which in my opinion, goes against the experienceof human history. Due to the absence of certain insights and crafts, taking artas the approach of expressing is not easy and available for all ordinaryindividuals. Those people who are not capable of expressing their ideologiesand impulses by this means are likely to take other more direct ways. Forinstance, for the majority of ordinary people who believed in the God, it isthrough prayers rather than paintings that show their loyalty and expect to theGod. In this case, the alternative way, in which people express themselves, might not only as effective as art works but also has certain more directinfluence on expressing the ideas and impulses of the society. The rationalealso applies to literature. Although many novels describe the malcontention inthe eve of independence of the United States, it is the insurgence by themasses rather than a handful of art works gain the freedom and independence, nomatter how brilliant and insightful those works are about this issue. In short, besides arts, there is always other direct and forceful reflection of those'hidden' ideas and impulses.
In sum, although the speaker's claim thatthe arts reflect certain ideas and impulses of a society bears some merits andreveal the function of didactics and self-expression by arts to some extent, itis premature to assume that those ideas and impulse cannot directly manifestthemselves and it is the only way to indicate 'otherwise' hidden ideas andimpulses. |
