130. how children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society.
我们需要普世价值诸如:values such as probity, love and courageMartin Luther King

The speaker’s assertion includes two claims: the first one is that children’s socialization determines the destiny of society and later the speaker points out the deficiency of current education in socialization. This statement is reasonable to some extent, however, the speaker fails to acknowledge other factors that would bring endurable values to society and make no further suggestions about how to promote the education.
Let’s first check out what is socialization. Socialization, a process to inherit customs, regulations, and ideologies, has two meanings: the first refers to the inculcation of social values, such as probity, love and persistence; the second meaning refers to the promotion of sociability which includes corporation, tolerance and leadership.
From this definition of socialization, one can readily realize the significance of it. Imagine a badly socialized person who can’t well integrate himself into society. He distain traditional social values, escape responsibility, show no concern to other’s feelings, and have no such words like corporation or fraternity in his dictionary. Such a person would definitely be isolated. One who don’t understand to love others will receive love from nobody either. As an isolated atom drifting in this world, he suffers from loneliness and indifference. It is the failure of socialization lead to this grim scene. Further, a more extreme condition shows itself in the form of the formation of anti-social character. Take Ma Jia jue as an example. As a college student in China, he, with tortuous anti-social characters, killed four classmates crudely. Haiyang Zhu, Liwei Guo, and etc. prove the bloody consequences that anti-social character might impose on our society.
However, socialization is not the only factor that influence the destiny of society. A firm belief in justice and love and the courage to maintain these beliefs against the majority of society is sometimes more important. Again, from the definition of socialization, one knows that socialization, a process to inherit popular values and costoms, don’t always lead to desirable outcomes. Social values don’t necessarily equal to good values. As everybody knows, the discrimination against African-Americans and women once was popular. Our society calls for more Martin Luther Kings and Mahatma Gandhis to challenge those devil social values, to exhort public attention to the disadvantaged and finally bring endurable and right customs and values to our society.
Now consider the author’s next claim that we have not yet learned how to raise children to create a better society. This grim description of the status quo justifies itself in the fact that our increasingly competitive society pays less attention to socialization and corporation. The primary concern of current education is the inculcation of basic knowledge and the training of survival skills which are considered to be necessary to sharpen one’s competitive edges in society. It is individual success rather than the prosperity of the whole society that matters to an ordinary. What’s worse, the increase of nuclear family means fewer interpersonal communication and cooperation opportunities for children. Children need thought conflict to learn to compromise and companies to learn cooperation and compassion. Without these interaction with peers, we can hardly imagine what our children, the future of our society would grow to be.
Actually, the education of socialization is a process happened everywhere and in every minute. Every time when children pick up sides on a village green, or debate with classmates on certain issues, or try to do some house work to pleasure parents, their habit, values, and communication skills are taking form. All the things we need
to do is to create more opportunities for them to interact with each other and place more emphasis on these trivial life events, learn how to instruct them when they are depressed and take what attitude when conflict existed. Socialization calls for the mutual effort of the whole society.

社会化的重要性:它是传承历史,保持社会延续性的必要条件;

Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King

The speaker’s assertion includes two claims: the first one is that children’s socialization determines the destiny of society and later the speaker points out the deficiency of current education in socialization. This statement is reasonable to some extent, however, the speaker fails to acknowledge other factors that would bring endurable values to society and make no further suggestions about how to promote the education.
Let’s first check out what is socialization. Socialization, which is termed by anthropologists as enculturation, reflects the process of inheriting customs, regulations, and ideologies. It is through this process that children learn to distinguish right from wrong, form a common character that is accepted by their own cultures but  different from other cultures, and become a qualified, or even popular member in their society.
Just as what water is to fish, so is what socialization to the continuity of culture and the personal success of children. Ever since the cavemen first tried to communicate the information of quarries by gestures, people have been construct symbols, taboos, and totems: that is their culture. Human beings, as a social animal, are far from living alone. People need these self-evident customs, regulations, and indications to communicate with each other and to function properly in their position, which are the result of socialization when they are young. Further, to be accepted by other members of society, children need to behave in comply with what they are expected. Imagine an aggressive children living in a easily-contented society, or a cooperative one in a competitive surrounding, both of them will find it hard to emerge into the majority, let alone success.
However, despite that a society with its children well socialized might maintain its tradition well and show a harmonious scene, such a panorama is far from an idealistic one. The progress of society calls for challenge rather than compliance, skepticism rather than blind acceptance. Taken it into consideration that the traditional values are not necessarily the right one and the general-accepted customs might bring devil consequences to those involved, it is equally significant to cultivate skeptical spirit, probity, and the courage to insist on the right values in children. Paragons include Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. No one can ignore the endurable values they bring to our society. Despite the influence from the genteel Indian society, Gandhi answered the calling from his conscience and lead the Indians to resist unfair treating and fight for sacred liberation. Martin Luther King, another pioneer in non-violence resistance, challenged the traditional view that African Americans are born to be inferior, secured progress in civil rights.
Even though socialization is not the only factor contributing to an ideal society, the significance of it can’t be denied. Having realized this, one might wonder what achievement our education has made in it. I hold that though the status quo of education in enculturation is not as grim a scene as the statement depicts, it indeed demand further improvements. Some might contend that socialization is a natural process happening almost everywhere and in every minute: children learn to consider other’s feelings under the task of distributing toys or fruits, learn to compromise during peer conflicts, and gradually build up dining etiquette by observing and modeling their parents behavior. However, deliberate instruction, which is often ignored, plays a vital role in children’s socialization. Classic stories set models for children to imitate and inform them what the valuable characters are. Well-designed games and moral dilemmas set children thinking deep into their daily lives and touching some eternal qualms. Further, considering the increase of one-child family, the whole society, which includes community, school, and parents, has to take the responsibility to create more interpersonal association opportunities for children. Unfortunately, our society did not place enough emphasis on it.
