社会化的重要性:它是传承历史,保持社会延续性的必要条件;
Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King
The speaker’s assertion includes two claims: the first one is that children’s socialization determines the destiny of society and later the speaker points out the deficiency of current education in socialization. This statement is reasonable to some extent, however, the speaker fails to acknowledge other factors that would bring endurable values to society and make no further suggestions about how to promote the education.
Let’s first check out what is socialization. Socialization, which is termed by anthropologists as enculturation, reflects the process of inheriting customs, regulations, and ideologies. It is through this process that children learn to distinguish right from wrong, form a common character that is accepted by their own cultures but different from other cultures, and become a qualified, or even popular member in their society.
Just as what water is to fish, so is what socialization to the continuity of culture and the personal success of children. Ever since the cavemen first tried to communicate the information of quarries by gestures, people have been construct symbols, taboos, and totems: that is their culture. Human beings, as a social animal, are far from living alone. People need these self-evident customs, regulations, and indications to communicate with each other and to function properly in their position, which are the result of socialization when they are young. Further, to be accepted by other members of society, children need to behave in comply with what they are expected. Imagine an aggressive children living in a easily-contented society, or a cooperative one in a competitive surrounding, both of them will find it hard to emerge into the majority, let alone success.
However, despite that a society with its children well socialized might maintain its tradition well and show a harmonious scene, such a panorama is far from an idealistic one. The progress of society calls for challenge rather than compliance, skepticism rather than blind acceptance. Taken it into consideration that the traditional values are not necessarily the right one and the general-accepted customs might bring devil consequences to those involved, it is equally significant to cultivate skeptical spirit, probity, and the courage to insist on the right values in children. Paragons include Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. No one can ignore the endurable values they bring to our society. Despite the influence from the genteel Indian society, Gandhi answered the calling from his conscience and lead the Indians to resist unfair treating and fight for sacred liberation. Martin Luther King, another pioneer in non-violence resistance, challenged the traditional view that African Americans are born to be inferior, secured progress in civil rights.
Even though socialization is not the only factor contributing to an ideal society, the significance of it can’t be denied. Having realized this, one might wonder what achievement our education has made in it. I hold that though the status quo of education in enculturation is not as grim a scene as the statement depicts, it indeed demand further improvements. Some might contend that socialization is a natural process happening almost everywhere and in every minute: children learn to consider other’s feelings under the task of distributing toys or fruits, learn to compromise during peer conflicts, and gradually build up dining etiquette by observing and modeling their parents behavior. However, deliberate instruction, which is often ignored, plays a vital role in children’s socialization. Classic stories set models for children to imitate and inform them what the valuable characters are. Well-designed games and moral dilemmas set children thinking deep into their daily lives and touching some eternal qualms. Further, considering the increase of one-child family, the whole society, which includes community, school, and parents, has to take the responsibility to create more interpersonal association opportunities for children. Unfortunately, our society did not place enough emphasis on it. |
