TOPIC:"How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society.Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
The statement above consists of two chaims that the destiny of society depends on the degree of children's socialization and that we have not yet learned how to educate our children to create a better society. In my view, socialization is important for the development of individuals as members of society, but only socialization is enough for our children to become good citizen or effective leaders in our future society? I disagree with it. Moreover, if we have not actually known the education about our children, our society now can be better than the last decade? In fact, our society continues steady improment. As far as I am concerned, I disagree with both chaims of the assertion of the speaker.
Socialization, described on Wikipedia, is a term used by sociologists, social psychologists, anthropologists, politicians and educationalists to refer to the process of inheriting norms, customs and ideologies. It may provide the individual with the skills and habits necessary for participation within their own society, playing an important role in helping children grow up to bring about a better society. Children who will contribute to our society should not only learn English, history, and math, but be socialized; in other words, they should learn to negotiate, cooperate, and assert themselves in respectablel manners. Most Presidents of the United States who have contributed to their times all were prominent social-activists. However, in my observation, socialization is only an important factor for children's development, but it is not enough.
The factors to determine the destiny of society are not only socialization, but include creation and imagination together with culture, knowledge and technology. Children who with rich creativity and imagination will bring us a more books, movies and arts, and thrust the deveiopment of the science and technology. Without Walt Disney and his Mickey Mouse, we cannot enjoy our happy time in Disneyland Park and with "Toy Story"s. Without John von Neumann and his "Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer", I may not write by keyboard in front of the screen now. Without Wright brother and their first successful human flight on December 17, 1903, we cannot have a inner with Barack Obama in The White House and have a cup of coffee with Ban Ki-moon in Manhattern one hour later. Futhermore, without culture, knowledge and technology, can our life now be so different from one hundred years before? Thus, to my point of view, the ability of socialization, creation and imagination together with culture, knowledge, and technology are the key points of cultivating our children, therefore determing the destiny of our society.
The speaker implies that we have not placed enough emphasis on children's growth, but I cannot agree with it. And in my observation the industrialized nations encourage education and put more emphasis on education, because education will determine the future of nation. For example, America, U.K, German and French, those developed countries with more high-educatied citizen than developing coutries. Although in the face of the financial crisis some parents may sometimes has to work hard and spend less time with their children, but most parents try their best to offer the best education for their children. And more and more schools of sorts, where children can learn not only culture, knowledge and technology, but group collaboration, interpensonal skills, and ever how to think on their own, be open to children to learn what they are interested in. Moreover, children can conveniently and efficiently take what they want by means of mass media and the internet. In short, the steady progress of economic and technology in recent quarter-century has illustrated that we could raise children to bring us a better society.
In sum, socialization is important for children's deveolpment, but not the crucial one, creativity and imagination are as important as socialization for children to create a better future. And parents have raised their children to bring a better society. Thus, I fundamentally disagree with both aspects of the speaker's dual claim. |
