The speaker asserts that imagination is more valuable than experience, for people who lack experience would approach a task without constrants of established habits and attitudes. Generally, I agree with this claim. However, at the same time we should not overlook the important value of experience.
To begin with, imagination is the source of creative ideas which is of vital importance to the progresses in every field. Consider the fiction writer Jules Verne, who through pure imagination devised highly specific methods and means for transporting men to outer space. What makes his imagination so remarkable is that the actual methods and means for space flight of today turns out to be essentially the same one as Jules Verne had imagined almost a hundred years ago. In the field of business, Bill Gates, when he dropped out from the Harvard University, he came up with the audacious imagination to start up the engine of Microsoft cooperated with Paul Allen, both of them were lack of experiences for either research or business, and now Microsoft has become the biggest software company of the world. From these facts we can see that imagination breeds remarkable insights and accomplishments.
However, people's experiences also contribute greatly to one's accomplishments which might have been overlooked by the speaker. In the exploration of science, the accumulation of knowledge and obervation has become the real source of people' academic knowledge and the foundation of further study. For government, the urgent problems such as pollution, energy crisis and war could not be effectively handled without early experiences in solving similar problems. Thus, we cannot overstate the function of imagination and ignore the great contribution of experience to human progress.
Moreover, imgination is the ability to creat new image based on the established facts, thus the combination of imagination and experiences might create classic works. The Nobel Prize winner Marquez, in his masterpiece One Hundred Years of Slitude, created a mysterious world with his imagination based on the bloody history facts of Latin America. His life experience enlighted him to have an insight of the Latin society and his imagination made the depictions more acceptable to the readers. Thus, perhaps it is improper to divide imagination and experience.
In sum, both imgination and experience are important for human progress. Each of them has its own merit and they complement each other and overemphasizing either side is not a wise choice.
