TOPIC: ARGUMENT14 - The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.

"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."

For people in big cities, the supermarkets may be the only sources where they can buy fresh vegetables. For people in a suburban town, they can buy fresh vegetables from local farmers. Second, people may turn to other alternative until the supermarkets settle their complaints. The condition that consumers dissatisfied with the fresh vegetable may be can not last for a long time, for instance, because of a new arrival of fresh vegetables.

Evidence the arguer tend to prove the increase of consumers’ interest of growing vegetables at home is that, the local gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out for three months in a row at the Village News. There is no information about the previous sales volume of the magazine. A promotion can improve the sales volume in a short time, or the magazine has been popular for several months. In addition, the arguer didn't tell the content of the magazine. For example, if the magazine mainly talks about how to decorate the gardens or the experience of cultivating flowers, the good sales volume can not support the assumption the arguer asserted.

Finally, even if consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables, the method brought about by the arguer is no good for increasing the profits. The arguer hadn't told about the sales status at that time, maybe the seeds didn't sale well during the past several months. Therefore, current stock is already enough for consumers' demands. Moreover, it would increase the cost to expanding the variety of vegetable seeds. Given a potential market, the arguer didn’t tell us the anticipated competitive in the suburban town. If there are already same companies in the town, expenses on advertising and publicity will play a risk on prospective profits.
