The arguer suggest that all colleges and universities’ faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach in the purpose to improve the quality of instruction. Though it sounds tempting, I just partially agree with the arguer’s point for the reason that in some areas it really needs it’s faculty spend time working outside the academic world and keep the pace with the real world, while in some other areas, such as in the pure theoretical field, do not need this.

1.能给学生职业指导

There is no deny that by keeping abreast with the changing demands of work as a professional, professors can help students who are serious about pursuing a career in that field to make more informed career decisions. As one of the primary goals of university is instructing students with proper skills so that they could quickly find the right jobs and fit with their working after graduate, one way for faculties to keep in sight of the job demanding is devoting themselves in to society. Nothing is more practical than passing down personal experiences. While provide the pragmatic job experiences to help students pursue a career, these living examples make courses vivid and meaningful. When I was having microorganism course, our teaching assistant who has two-year experience working in beer factory, impressed me deeply by almost reconstructing an intact producing line in lively exposition.

What is more, in most cases, when turn the theories into practical, the value of the theories are enhanced in practical using and benefit the public. It is not only a way to improve quality of instruction, but also bridges the academic circle to the whole society. Since the professors in university always represent the highest theoretical level of the specific field, encouraging professors to participate the outside work no doubt manifests the value of university affecting on society. By field investigation, a professor of anthropology could help government to solve the living conflict in tribes, at the same time, this pragmatic experience is the perfect material for courses.

3.但是在一些领域不适用

However, there is no need and unwarranted to expand this broad claim to embrace the entire faculty in the college. For those who work in the pure theoretical field, such as mathematics, literature, history, philosophy, etc., they may find it difficult to combine their teaching with relevant professional fields. Under such circumstance, compelling them to gain the experience in the practical work is no help for their improvement of instructing quality. A professor of theoretical physics, for instance, could hardly find proper place to extend his career except in the laboratory provided by university.

4.要平衡时间分配

Moreover, what the most crucial factor should be considered in this claim is that how the faculties balance the time they spend on outside working and the time they spend on teaching and researching, for the reason that spending too much time and energy will inevitably have some adverse influence on their teaching and researching by distracting them from the instructing work they should concentrate on. University, when encourage faculties in proper field to take outside word, at the same time, should limit the volume of the outside work they devolve in, in order to promise the quality of the instruction.

In sum, spending time working outside the academic field could gain for faculties merit when they give students employment guidance and when it comes the theories operating in the practice. However, faculties could hardly gain anything in outside working, if they are in some fields, which have little connection with practical use. In the main, when require faculties to work outside, university should firstly promise the quality of instruction by balancing the time distributed on instruction and outside working.
