The recommendation from the professor at Xanadu College that a long-distance learning program based on computers development will enhance the kudos of the College appears rational at the first glance because of the increase enrollment, the easy adaption of  traditional courses for the distance learning and faculty’s more available time in extensive research as the author discussed above. However, with close scrutiny of the recommendation, i find none of these 3 reasons provide strong support of the conclusion.



Firstly, more enrollment do increase the college’s income from student tuition, however, this does not indicate that the program will benefit the college financially. Perhaps, the cost of the program is larger than the income, or perhaps the increase is so slight that can be ignored. Without a cost-profit analysis, the professor can’t simply assert that more enrollment will result in higher income. Even if the more enrollment ensure the higher income, the professor provides no evidence that the program will for sure leads to more students enrolling in their courses.



Secondly, merely due to the fact that the easy adaptation of 2 traditional courses for distance learning last year cannot conclude the generation that it’s easy to adapt traditional courses for distance learners. Chances are the especial 2 traditional courses are easily adapted due to their own features that different from other courses. In that case, the adaption of other courses will be done with great difficulty which can be a time-consuming task as well as energy-consuming one. Besides, last year maybe an aberration. Thus, we can’t conclude that the adaptation work this year will be easy as well.



At last, though faculty may have fewer classroom obligations by using computer programs and taped lectures, they may not spend the extra time in researching. Perhaps they spend the time on leisure, or perhaps they spend the time on their own hobbies. Even assuming that the extra time saved by distance learning will be spent on research, the professor cites his recommendation on further assumption that this will leads to some breakthrough on their researches which will enhancing the reputation of Xanadu College. However, common sense tells us that more time isn’t ensure success.



Although the professor’s recommendation of developing a distance learning program aims at enhancing the reputation of Xanadu College, weather or not it works is still at doubts. Before put the recommendation into practice, more evidence should be provided, such as the program will ensure more enrollment and will profit a lot; the adaptation will be easy to do; the extra time saved by the program will be spent on research.
