ISSUE218: "In order for any work of art-whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song-to have merit, it must be understandable to most people."
My answer:
The purpose of art is making people's life brighter. Not only can art give people amusement, but can inspire us to explore our world. There is a saying goes that in order to have a merit, any work of art should be understandable to most people. This viewpoint is complex and controversial. Different people may have different judgements due to their respective opinions. Well, in my point of view, art should be understandable, but it is unnecessary to make every work of art be understandable to most of us. My viewpoint will be strongly strengthened by the following discussing:
First of all, some kind of art need people to have enough education to enjoy. A Person who have little knowledge of music may find it is uncomfortable to sit in a concert hall. Paintings of some greatest artists can only be understood by people who have be well educated in art. If we make every work of art understood by most of people, we will lose a great number of masterpieces like the painting of Picasso, the music of Mozart, and so forth. And thus could make some people who are well cultivated in art feel bored and angery. So in order to suit different groups of people divided by the level of education experiecnce in art, we should have multiple levels of art.
Secondly, some patterns of art require people some special knowledge and experience to enjoy. People who have experienced wars may find it is easily to understand the work of art in which the cruelty of battle is reflected. And people who have studied computer in college may laugh more when they are see a comedy reflecting life of programmers. Today, our society is becoming more and more diversity. Different people may have different background of experience, education and knowledge. In order to enjoy different people, we should have different kind of work in art, some of which may be just understood by a certain group of people.
Indeed, to be understandable is the basic requirement of almost every work of art. But we should also not forget that the purpose of art - to make people's life brighter, as I mentioned above. If a piece of work of art can be understandable by a certain group of people, not by most of the people, it can still have a merit, if it can give people laughter, or make people know more about the nature and society in which they live.
