"When the neighboring town of Williamsville adopted a curfew four months ago that made it illegal for persons under the age of 18 to loiter or idle in public places after 10 p.m., youth crime in Williamsville dropped by 27 percent during curfew hours. In Williamsville's town square, the area where its citizens were once most outraged at the high crime rate, not a single crime has been reported since the curfew was introduced. Therefore, to help reduce its own rising crime rate, the town of Dalton should adopt the same kind of curfew. A curfew that keeps young people at home late at night will surely control juvenile delinquency and protect minors from becoming victims of crime."



Grounding on the achievement that youth crime in Williamsville dropped by 27 percent, supposing that was caused by adopted a curfew that keeps young people at home, and then synthesizing a curfew will surely control juvenile delinquency and protect minors from becoming victims of crime. At the end, the arguer claimed that the town of Dalton should adopt the same kind of curfew. The article seems convincing at the first glance, however, it contented a lot of flaws.

First of all, It seems reasonable that the decreased percentage of crime during curfew hours is due to not allow the juvenile to loiter in publec places after 10.p.m.. However, the editorial of Dalton are failing to consider other possible alternatives to the decreasing criminal after forbidding the juvenile to idling during curfew hours. Such alternatives may include the fact that there are less adult crime during that time, or that the force of police may be more powerful. It is possible that there are more adult crimes in Dalton than in Williamsville. In addition, the editorial has failed to consider that all the victims want to report the crimes. Maybe there have still been some not open deeds since the curfew was introduced.

Second, a four-month period is not a particularly long time frame for the editorial the determine that the introduction of curfew has influenced the number of crime in one area. It is mentioned to the argument that Williamsville criminal deeds decreased during the time period. This may have been a time, such as during bad weather conditions, when less crimes want to go out and therefore the number of crimes decreased.


What’s more, Williamsville and Dalton are totally different town, the law that is proper for W does not mean it is proper for D also. The population and the percentage of juvenile is different, maybe the percentage of juvenile in W is much higher than in D, so faced to the same law, D town may gain less influence than W town. And the education level is varying from D town to W town, if the education level is low in W town, everybody should constrain their action only by law, then the law is a useful mean to reduce the crime rate, but if the level in D town is much higher, people always restrict their behavior by moral regulation, what should be done and what should not is very clearly in their mind, then what use to erect such law? It is totally unnecessary.

In sum, before any final decisions are made about the introduction of curfew, the citizens and officials of Dalton should evaluate all possible alternatives and causes for the decreased number of crimes over four-month period in Williansivlle and analyze the difference between Dalton and Williansville. Following with blindness makes no sense.
