Does it always true that student who has learned only facts have learned very little as the author suggested? In response to this issue, one need to analyze it comprehensively and systematically, the assertion has merit, which I agree with, that memorizing facts after students have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts can help explain those facts. While, after close scrutiny of the assertion, I can not entirely agree with the whole assertion, from my perspective, it is not necessary to know the ideas and concepts after students studied new facts for all the circumstances, and to combine memorizing the facts and studying the ideas, trends, and concepts will be a win-win game.

First and foremost, there is no denying that studying the ideas, trends, and concepts can help students memorize the facts. As some facts may be boring and complex for students to memorize at first, by studying the background can help students comprehend the fact vividly and deeply. For example, history, simply memorizing the historic facts, which is solid on the surface, while if researching relative interesting stories , there is no doubt will be favorable for students to attain the history lines and backgrounds, thus can be useful for students grasping the facts, even in detail. In this sense, I can safely draw the conclusion that studying the ideas, trends, and concepts helps memorizing facts.

In the second place, despite the merit from the author's claim, the conclusion remains to be questionable. It is not invariable that students have to know the ideas, trends, and concepts because of their limited knowledge, not enough time, and little function of knowing those in some certain situations. I will further illustrate these in virtue of three aspects, firstly, textbooks sometimes seldom list relative ideas may represent the fact that it is much difficult for these students to grasp at their current academic level, so just memorizing the facts is enough, and they can further comprehend that in future study, while at current it is enough they can use the fact. Secondly, in the view of the fact that
nowadays students always have many fields to study, may be they would not have enough time sparing on searching such ideas. Thirdly, some facts, such as some formations, new inventions, there may be no ideas behind them, or there is less use ness to know the ideas rather than just memorize the facts.

Finally and may be the most importantly, memorizing facts and studying the ideas, trends, concepts are both indispensable for students, and people should establish a bridge between these two events for using them for comprehending more efficiently and effectively. The reason I claim that they are both useful is, on the one hand, only memorizing facts is not good for students to wholly grasp the fact and is not heath for them to cultivate the ability of thinking and analyzing, on the other hand only studying the ideas, trends, and concepts, people can not recall the fact accurately, thus may do not know how to feedback it into practice. While by combining both of them can give a give favor. For instance, when dealing with a mathematical problem, accurately memorized the formation in mind, and with the comprehensive of it people can use to work out the problem.

From the analysis above, I would like to commit to the optimal conclusion that memorizing and studying are both essential, and students should combine them when facing certain particular situations.
