ISSUE 153
153. "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

The speaker makes a claim that students should maintain the attitude of skepticism towards anything they are taught rather than accept them passively. It might be attempting to agree with the statement on the basis that the skeptic attitude has always spawned the birth of science innovation. Nevertheless,

To begin with, the implicit rationale behind the speaker’s statement involves at least two reasons. First, truth is expected to be more clearly understood through the process of questioning and debating. There are details that hide in the theories and experiments taught to students. Only through discussing
and questioning can students grasp every aspects and applicable conditions of the concepts and knowledge. Even scientists need to pay for the outcome of applying theories or formulas under inappropriate conditions. Secondly, few would dispute that there would always be errors in the so-called “truth” that we learn from former generations, either because of the flawed explanation by teachers or because of lack of appropriate conditions that is no longer exists in current days. If the students passively accept the entire courses without skepticism, they are likely to make mistakes by following the wrong direction.

Having recognized these two consideration of the assertion, the skeptic attitude towards whatever students study seems not only advisable but necessary, nevertheless, absolute skepticism could also trap students on their way to find truth and knowledge. One such argument is that complete skepticism without proper comprise could distract students from learning. Some errors that have little to do with the subject could have been ignored, yet, students who put every fact under careful scrutiny are risking missing more important context. The effectiveness and efficiency of studying are adversely affected under this situation, not to say greater progress in science development.

A second argument against the speaker’s position has to do with the quality of cooperation between study partners or co-workers. Students are learning not only from teachers but also from other student. This extreme option of skepticism of study could do harm to students by influencing their way of thinking. When every point of view are questioned through student’s communication with other people, neither agreements nor
achievements can be reached through the process of cooperation. In fact, people who fail to work others cannot make any great accomplishment in an era of extremely high efficient networking.

In sum, taking skepticism towards what students study could be beneficial to them in ways that help them better understand the concepts and knowledge and tell true from wrong. However, complete skepticism might also do harm to students by spending efforts on tedious useless facts and encouraging a wrong method in communicate and cooperate with others. It is important for students to strike a balance between two extremes.
