issue: Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.
The speaker claims that since tradition and modernization are incompatible, one must choose between. While to some extent some conservative ideas and lagging traditional cultures hamper the development of modernization, I tend to agree that most excellent traditions are closely relevant to modernization. In other words, excellent traditions which are handed down from one generation to the next generation promote the advances in modernization, and at the same time, the development of modernization rich traditions.
Admittedly, some conservative ideas and lagging traditional cultures impede the development of modernization. Traditions were formed or shaped in the past have characters of inertia and conservation. Hence, traditions inevitably include some harmful and conservative ideas which impede the development of modernization. For example, in China the conservative idea of men being more superior to women that has restrained people’ mind for several thousand years are heavily conflicting with modernization idea that boys and girls are equal. As a result, the conservative idea plays adverse role in liberating people’s mind.
Nevertheless, most excellent traditions which were passed and modernization are closely linked and inseparable. From the development vision, tradition and modernization are relative: tradition was modernization of the past, and has been gradually developing today modernization; yet, modernization at present will become tradition of the future. In other words, tradition is development foundation of modernization. Moreover, since most excellent traditions have experienced closely screening from history, not only do they prepare for modernization, but also be the driving force of development of modernization. For example, in China the excellent traditional ideas of inclusiveness and harmony have become the development theme of China’s modernization. At the same time, modernization is also continually rich tradition. We take harmony as an example again. In the past of China idea of harmony emphasized the unify of human and nature, which required human to passive acceptance of things nature gave. At present, modernization gives more interpretations about harmony, including harmonious relationship between human and nature that human should not only explore nature, but also study to protect it, and harmony of society.
In sum, while some conservative thinking may impede development of modernization, tradition and modernization are not incompatible from the development vision. Conversely, both of them are interrelated and complemented, and mutually promote development.
