【UPDATED】
"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
只有针对每个学生的需要和兴趣,教育才真正的有意义。
In this era of rapid technological changes leading to increasing life complexity, our society is developing an expanding need of talents with diverse individualities and abilities of innovation. In this case, education is actually in need of some changes to be more students-focused, while maintaining the foundation of general knowledge that should be served to each student.
Education which totally overlooks the needs and interests of students has been proved to be inefficiency and detrimental to developing individuality. As one of my tutors once said (and I paraphrase), “Imagine a school in which all the students take same classes, students are treated not better than chickens in chicken farm, same forage crops, same environment, surely same products will be produced. “ It seems that students are being put into same molds while they are receiving education that ignores their own individualities. They are supposed to attend endless stereotyped classes teaching what they are not interested in, and their passion for learning and inborn talents might be eliminated and ruined along the boring process of such monotonous education. Inflexibility in education is likely to result in a dislike towards learning among students, thus effectiveness and anticipated goal inteaching can hardly be reached. In an survey conducted by Asian Institute for Educational Research in 2009, about 80 percent of the respondents from thousands of high schools in China, Korea and Japan, indicated that they feels strong resistance to listening while being on class teaching what they totally have no interest in.
Hence, an educational system which is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of students would surely be much more effective in many aspects. Whereas students have a variety of hobbies and interests, to satisfy their desire to improve themselves in these certain areas can be an excellent way to motivate their initiative to study. There is a famous saying say that, "Interest is the best teacher." What's more, a more student-centered education can help students determine their future way of profession earlier, reducing their confusion in life goals and career planning. All of these will absolutely make contribution to a healthy and efficiency development of society.
However, the feasibility and necessity to build an educational system which is totally designed to satisfy students' interest is open to doubt. To begin with, granted that there are various individual needs of students waiting to be met, we are not able to find teachers for each request. The resources what educators have are limited, so a ideal system for the desire of every student is just fantasy. Furthermore, giving too much power to students is likely to result in an unbalanced education. Our society actually needs a complexity of abilities among graduates from school; however, all of these students are still required by public to gain common sense and general knowledge of many subjects, which can be only taught when in school. It is widely accepted that only with them can students better blend in the whole society as part of integrity in the future. That is to say, no matter how our educational system is reformed, the basic foundation of imparting general knowledge and principles should be preserved.
Taking the two sides into consideration, we can deduce that the best choice is to build an educational system in which demands of imparting general knowledge and students’ own interests and needs can be both satisfied. Some courses can be open according to student’s requests, while a series of compulsory basic courses are reserved. A structure of education above can serve the extensive needs of students and society.
In final analysis, the ultimate target of education is to build a skyscraper for every student, with a plain but strong groundwork and a shining individually-designed body. Once the balance between building foundation and developing individuality can be reached, the education can be really effective and fruitful.
