提纲:
The speaker asserts that so much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present. In my point of view, however, I disagree with the speaker that many deep conceptions will remain in people's mind. Besides, even if so much is new and complex today, looking back for an understanding of the past can provide useful guidance for living in the present.

In the first place, the reason why I have such a view is that many notions have not changed much over history. To illustrate this point, here is an example that is very persuasive: many of Shakespeare’s works is still appreciated by the common people, which means humans have some spiritual features that will never change. Another example that can support this idea includes Homeric epic's worldwide popularity. The Art of War, written 2500 years ago, is still used by many military schools and businessmen as textbook or even competition Bible. Under these circumstances, it is obvious that humans' certain features like spirits will not be easily modified, thus not much is new and complex today.

In the second place, even if much is changing rapidly and the world is sophisticated, much evidence has shown that turning to history can give people a lot of nurture to face the temporary challenges. Just imagine what it would be like if we neither read histories nor learn from forerunners. Then we will not know how to make fire, to build skyscrapers, to treat some diseases, and so on. Great scientist Newton once said, "if I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants." He made great breakthroughs in physics, but he is modest and objective to owe his success to great thinkers of the past. Another example is that many western countries advocate people to trace back to Confucius to learn his wisdom. As a Nobel Prize winner declared in Paris in 1988, If mankind wants to survive in the 21st century, they must recall what had happened over the past 2,500 years and draw on the wisdom of Confucius. Confucius expressed the well-known principle, "Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself". For the time being, stacks of wars and terrorism call our caution that if we don't learn to care others, our earth may be destroyed and human beings are extinct. Hence, another equally important aspect is that if man was to survive, he needs to look back for an understanding of the past.
Finally, to understand the condition of the present, it is also necessary to get motivated by those celebrities of the past. For example, Stephen Hawking is disabled and cannot speak; he uses one finger to communicate. He showed that Einstein's General Theory of Relativity implied space and time would have a beginning in the Big Bang and an end in black holes. He is regarded as the most outstanding theoretical physicist after Einstein. His experience can provoke us to become an accomplished person.
