The speaker asserts that looking back for a understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present for the reason that so much is new and complex today. As far as I concerned, although there are many new and complex matters today, the study of history still can help us in many aspects. It is necessary to make progress to learn the civilization results of ancestors.


To begin with, although some particular problems we faced today have not been confronted by our ancestors, understanding of the past still can provide some enlightenment. The knowledge of traditional subjects and the methods of analyzing problems are also worth learning by us. We can see no further than Internet which had not been known by people 50 years ago. So when faced with the problems related to Internet such as whether the Micro-blogging will be popular, how to avoid the leak of private information by the online social networking websites like Facebook, we cannot find out the direct answers from the history 50 years ago. However, it doesn’t mean study of history does nothing to deal with these problems. Instead, we still get some useful enlightenment. To the problem whether micro-blogging will be popular, we can analyze it using traditional sociology. We can analyze its positive and effective aspects as well as whether it meets the social requirements of people. Turn our attention to protect personal privacy, we have the experience to protect people’s rights by laws, so it is not hard to solve the second problem by legislation. In short, an understanding of the past is very helpful to deal with the problems today even if those problems have not appeared in the past.

What’s more, our knowledge and experience is based on learning our ancestors’. Without understanding the past, we will not be able to make progress. Isaac Newton said, ‘If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.’
Here, the giants represent the knowledge and experience of our ancestors. Although the world is advancing in a high speed and we have improved many classic theories which posed by our ancestors, it is hard to make new achievement without the experience of ancestors. Even if the ideas that have not been implemented can also guide us to explore. Take Utopia for example, the perfect society has not been realized, but the thought still inspire us to pursue a better society.


Last but not least, learning the mistakes in the history cannot help us to avoid repeating these problems. Francis Bacon said ‘History make wise’. The saying is constantly used to point out that understating history can help people make wise decisions. We can see no further than the Watergate Case, it sounded a warning against the abusing of political power. Another example is the two World Wars, they both brought great disaster to the people almost all over the world. As learning a lesson from them, we will be more cautious to solve conflicts and try our best to avoid wars. All in all, understanding the past can guide the living at present, because it can help us to avoid repeating the mistakes in the history.

To sum up, an understanding of the past provides guidance for living in the present. The methods of analyzing problems can enlighten us, the knowledge and experience is the foundation of our new achievements, the mistakes in the history can help us to avoid repeating them.
