TOPIC: ARGUMENT209 - The following recommendation was made by the Human Resources Manager to the board of directors of the Fancy Toy Company. "In the last three quarters of this year, under the leadership of our president, Pat Salvo, our profits have fallen considerably. Thus, we should ask for her resignation in return for a generous severance package. In Pat's place, we should appoint Rosa Winnings. Rosa is currently president of Starlight Jewelry, a company whose profits have increased dramatically over the past several years. Although we will have to pay Rosa twice the salary that Pat has been receiving, it will be well worth it because we can soon expect our profits to increase considerably."

The argument is well presented, but not thoroughly reasoned. By making a comparison between the Fancy Toy Company, which led by their president Pat Salvo, had experienced grave depression in the last three quarters and the Starlight Jewelry, which led by Rosa Winnings, have tremendously thrived over the past several years, the argument recommends that the Fancy Toy Company should hire Rosa Winnings as their new president seems logical.

Firstly, the arguer's recommendation depends on the assumption that no other factor than the current president---Pat Salvo--- caused the considerable decrease of profits. However, common snecse informs us that this assumption is a poor one since profit is effected by many other unexpected factors such as economic depression or generally increasing cost of material. Perhaps Pat Salvo had made a long term strategy which will benefit the company in long run, so that it is understandable that the recent depression happened. Or perhaps all toy company had experienced similar situation due to the depression of the whole toy industry which is impossible to avoid. Without ruling out these and other possibilities, it is presumptuous to conclude that Pat Salvo must be responsible for the decrease of profits.

Secondly, the argument fails to establish a causal relationship between Rosa Winnings and Starlight Jewelry's prosperity. A company's success can hardly contribute to one person considering the importance of all the employee's endeavor. It is possible that a "luxury feat", that is to say, people are fascinated about luxury and flock to buy jewelry, lead to the dramatic profit increase. It is also likely that the new technological advance largely subtract the cost of jewelry making.

Finally, the arguer makes a false analogy. Even we accept the arguer's assumption we discuss above, it also dubious to draw a conclusion that Rosa Winnings who made a outstanding feat in Starlight Jewelry, would also do excellent job in the Fancy Toy Company since these two companies are completely different . It is tempting to think that Rosa Winnings, a distinguished president, knows well about the machination of business of jewelry while have little understanding of that of toy industry. And Rosa Winnings rich human resources in jewelry industry will be wasted because we cannot expect Rosa would sell toys to her previous customs.

To sum up, the argument is not as persuasive as it stands. To make it more logical acceptable, the arguer should make further analysis to make sure that Rosa Winnings is indeed a better president than Pat Salvo. Moreover, the recommendation will be more substantial if the arguer render similarities between these two company and therefore we can more certain about that Rosa Winnings can vitalize the Fancy Toy Company as she did in the Starlight Jewelry.
