I131. "The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of society."
I absolutely agree with the speaker's claim that arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of society. The arts in particular period of history usually play the role of reflection of the society. This reflection sometimes can be obvious, and also can be intricate. However, if you admit that all the ideas and inspirations of artists’ works are come from the environment, classes and society where they live amidst, it is not difficult for you to make the same conclusion.
There are countless giant artists in history that influenced us by their revolutionary ideas that lighted the people's awareness of their equity, liberty and democrat rights. These ideas are expressed by the form of artistic works; and while affecting the benefits of dominators, they were resisted by ruling class. Whereas, these works, in accordance of benefits of public and social advancement, would lead an irreversible general trend of historical development. The perfect example is "The Last Supper" which is a world-famous painting created by Leonardo da Vinci. Being one of the three giants of the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci paid close attention to the inner emotions and the outer expressions of the figures in his work. This humanism spirit encouraged people to find and appreciate the beauty of human. Hence, I believe arts can reveal the hidden impulses of society.
Likewise, the arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas as well. Take a look at "Animal farm" which was written by George Orwell, English writer, journalist and social critic. This dystopian allegorical novel foretold that the Soviet Union would fall to pieces. Considering the time when this book first be published, the year of 1945, when Soviet Union, owing most powerful might of military, maybe is the only nation which can compete against the United States of America, people do not place much value on this book. However, this meaningful prediction has been proved by 1991. We should aware that, even the judgment towards communism was not very acceptable at that time, this idea has been revealed by literature. Consequently, I agree with the speaker's statement.
In spite of this, some people may still remain unconvinced; they would argue that, under the pressure given by ruling class, many artists may submit to them and create irreal or ill-founded works. However, to some extent, I believe these works still reflect the conditions of society. For instance, In the preliminary stage of new China, politicalization seriously impaired the literary circle of China. The writers who stuck on their pursuit of accomplished writing skill are usually shunted aside, meanwhile, those who sang the praises of communism have been extolled and rewarded indiscriminately. Thereby, even the writers who submit to politicalization, their works can be taken as evidences of politicalization themselves. In some way, arts still reveal otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of society.
To sum up, arts are the reflection of society; they can reveal our society from any respects. No matter it is the painting, music or literature, even the ways might be varied, they reveal otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of society. |
