TOPIC: ISSUE159 - "The human mind will always be superior to machines because machines are only tools of human minds."

With the rapid development of science and technology, an increasing number of machines were invented to make our lives more convenient and comfortable. In modern society, people tend to rely more and more on machines to finish complex tasks. On the other hand, people's opinion divided about whether machines are superior to human brains and may take over humanity. However, we should first analyze what "superior" means here.
To begin with, since the first computer was invented in 1945 by an American people, we humanity had rare chance to win the game against computers in the calculating competition. Decades ago a report showed, the computer may work out the data of a missile range within minutes, while people, in a number which may fill in a classroom, all of whom are good at calculating, had to finish the same tasks for two days. Let alone the most advanced super computer in the twenty-first century.
More over, if the "superior" indicates memorizing ability, humanity cannot rival with machines, either. For an average person, he has to repeat a poem or an axiom for several times before he can memorize it, and as time roll by he begins to forget, too. Those who can recite what he has read and can still recall after a sufficient long time are merely one in a million who are called genius. Nevertheless, modern inventions may memorize things within seconds, even regardless of complexity and length, and will keep the materials unless humanity wants to diminish them. What I described above is U-disk, a small but convenient invention that almost everyone has used. People take them everywhere to help remember ideas, essays, formulas, which are far superior to human brain in memory.
On the other hand, when it comes to feelings and predict, human brains are obviously superior to machines. A three-year-old boy could naturally cry when he is upset and laugh when he finds something happy. However, robots, even the most advanced ones, cannot react and show his emotions independently because the fixed programmer inside fails to analyze human affections. That is the sharp difference between human brains and machines.
In addition, humanity has the ability to learn from their errors, accumulate experiences and conduct creative thinking, while machines cannot. Machines are only able to work under humanity's guidance and follow the preset rules. You may ask any of your friends about what present to prepare for your mother, however you will not counsel a machine because creative thinking seems their Achilles’ heels.
To sum up, we have to define what is superior first then to compare human minds and machines. In aspects of calculating and memorizing, the machines are the winner, while in creativity and emotions human brains are naturally more advanced. We need to understand the advantages and disadvantages of both human minds and machines to achieve a more efficient and harmonious society. |
