"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
Why +if+ then+ position
I agree with the speaker’s assertion that education should put student’s individual needs and interests as priority and individualized education can increase education effectiveness by great measure. but the speaker fail to consider other approaches originated from social development and subject knowledge when designing education.

Taking a perspective of education history, education has walked a long way towards individualized education since industrial revolution. Actually, individualized education can be dated back to more than 2000 years ago when Confucius in China recruited students and made study tour around country and when Plato set up the School of Athens, they both communicated with their diciples individually and guide them in accordance with their aptitudes. However, industrialization made education a workshop producing people in a same norm regardless of individual differences. Realizing the problem, soon the issue of individual need and development was put back on table, individual difference was taken into account in education . American psychologists invent varies scales assessing individual needs in every aspects and separated students with special needs from regular children. In 1970s, the first instruction machine was invented, the machine can design instruction based on individual user’s learning pace. In recent year, education technology is developing rapidly to equip the learning environment to support individualized education. For example, as soon a user register an online course, a specially designed intelligent agent will learn the user’s need and interest and recommend him/her learning material accordingly.

Although much effort has been made, the vision that education is designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student is still far from reality.
The class room size is getting smaller, but it never possible to attribute a specialized teacher to each student. Technology of Artificial intelligent can assist learning but can never replace an experienced and caring teacher.

While we acclaim the value of individual’s need and interests, at the same time we should be circumspect about education design and be aware that social development and subject knowledge system also determines what students learn and how they are taught. Whether education is effective are not only characterized by students’ self satisfaction and realization. To assess an education system, we also need to see how the educated are recognized by society and whether the essence of past generation’s experience are well passed on to the current generation. In the late 1970, Chinese government raised a slogan that” Science and technology are primary productive forces. ” and put great invest in science education. so children then spend much time studying science believing “Math Physics and Chemistry rule all” as the
popular saying goes. And they were encouraged to choose science or engineer as their college major. 40 years later, it turned out that China has undergone a great leap in science and technology development , even leading in some area like aviation. If student were educated according to there own interest, I assume many more people would turn to easier subjects. John Dewey, the world known philosopher and educational reformer, asserts education should be child-centered. He argues that education should not be focused on curriculum where only subject matter are discussed in the classroom. He even set up an experiential school to apply his theory. While the movement turned out to failure because the students didn’t learned enough subject knowledge as required.

To sum up, I agree with the author’s assertion that effective education should be individualized because final objective to education is personal development and we are always perusing perfect individualized education. Nevertheless, we can not ignore the fact that education bears responsibility to bring up contributing citizen and pass on culture through generation. So education only focusing on personal needs and interests regardless of social need and subject knowledge is bound to fail
