TOPIC: ARGUMENT179 - The following is a memorandum written by the director of personnel to the president of the Cedar Corporation.
"It would be a mistake to rehire the Good-Taste Company to supply the food in our employee cafeteria next year. It is the second most expensive caterer in the city. In addition, its prices have risen in each of the last three years, and it refuses to provide meals for people on special diets. Just last month three employees complained to me that they no longer eat in the cafeteria because they find the experience 'unbearable.' Our company should instead hire Discount Foods. Discount is a family-owned local company and it offers a varied menu of fish and poultry. I recently tasted a sample lunch at one of the many companies that Discount serves and it was delicious-an indication that hiring Discount will lead to improved employee satisfaction."

The argument is well-presented, but with some logical flaws, it can not convince me so much. Actually, I can not concede with it.
To begin with, it is said that to rehire the Good-Taste Company to supply the food was a mistake because of its high prices and its rules which was described as refusing to provide meals for people on special diets. It was too arbitrary to judge the quality of their service according to their prices and company rules. Because we can not easily draw a conclusion that the prices and quality of service has a cause-and-effect relationship without mounts of reliable evidence. Maybe the higher price they got, the more satisfy they can offer. They can use a lot of money to hire well-experienced stuff to serve comfortably which can improve the fame of the company. And refusing to provide meals for people on special diets maybe illustrate special attitude and spirit of
this company which can offer more superior service to satisfied their customers.
In addition, the complaining of mere three employee is not insufficient evidence to conclude that the Good-Taste Company had false. Because the reasons led to the grumble are varied. The arguer must make sure that there is no other reason causing the complaint and she/he should ask other employees for a survey which is aimed at the Good-Taste Company. In any event, before cancel other factors the arguer can not offer any valuable information. Maybe the mood of those employees cause the passive attitude of 'unbearable'.
What's more, a sample lunch at one of the many companies that Discount serves and it was delicious-can not be an indication that hiring Discount will lead to improved employee satisfaction without large mount of evidence of research. Maybe the common food tasted worse than the sample food. Many companies will offer better samples to increase the rate of their sale. And even if the fact as the arguer showed that can not demonstrate it is a good decision to choose the Discount. Because Discount is a family-owned local company, as we all know, family-owned system presents many problems itself. And those problems each can limit the service of the company. We don’t know when it will explode It is dangerous.
So, it can not persuade me until the arguer can offer more evidence. For example, the arguer can organize a survey of satisfaction about their hired companies. And offering other evidence to show it is surely true to choose Discount instead of Good-Taste Company. It is important to rule out other companies which may serve better than Discount does.
