题目:ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
字数:563
用时:0:40:53
日期:2010-7-22

In recent years, the issue of the value of history is so much concerned to a point where a wide discussion has been aroused. Some people maintain that the study of history would be useless if it is not apparently related to our daily lives. In taking various factors into consideration, to large extent, however, I side on the opposite of this claim and reckon that it is unreasonable to decide a study having value or not through such a utilitarian point of view

First of all, I have to concede that a study of history surely has something useful in it for human beings when it is closely related to our daily lives, for we can learn from our ancestors’ success to gain some experience, and hinder from committing a similar fallacy from their mistakes as well. Nevertheless, the relation of history and today is a complicated subject while everyone may have his own opinion. It is impossible for us as well as the history scholars to get an exact definition of the subtle "relation", so if we put too much emphasis on whether a topic is closely to us enough or not, our poor history researchers may find it a mission impossible to choose an appropriate subject to work on.

To go further, as we are not able to give a proper definition to the word "relevant", some history affairs which look quite far from our everyday lives may maintain a more significant meaning inside. Let's suppose that some scholars want to know the material of a group of ancient peoples' houses. Some people may think that they are wasting time: no matter what kind of object consists of those old-looking houses, it can be undoubtedly that we contemporary human beings would never use such strange things to build our homes. However, if we look at this debate in another way, we may admire the wisdom of our ancestors: WOW, why can't I find out that houses are able to be made by such simple materials? What crazy creativity do these guys hold! As we are encouraged by these houses, we become much more hard working than ever before in order to demonstrate that we are cleverer than our ancestors.

At last, it is unwise for us to emphasize on which is "useful" for us. As the old saying says "interesting is the best teacher". We are not easy to be tired and bored when we are playing games or chatting with our best friends. The similarity of these "useless things" is "we are interested in them". It may be a sad story, nevertheless we have no choice but to admit that most works which looks as necessities are hated by most of us: go to school on time; full-time jobs; boring experiments... impossible to count in clearly. For we have been surrounded by such a large numbers of troubles, why can't we throw all the burdens away and enjoy even a small period of time without homework, examinations and papers? After short time relaxation, we are supposed to be full of energy to devote ourselves into new tough tasks.

To sum up, a research would be valuable if the researcher is really interested in it and is willing to put an avalanche of energy and time to work for it. Our goal is to find some happiness from our sweat, that's enough.

It is impossible for us as well as the history scholars to get an exact definition of the subtle "relation", so if we put too much emphasis on whether a topic is closely to us enough or not, thenour poor history researchers may find it a mission impossibleis an impossible mission
to choose an appropriate subject to work on.

感觉这种表达方式有问题吧?).

It may be a sad story
(这一句表达什么意思?), nevertheless we have no choice but to admit that most works which looks as necessities are hated by most of us: go to school on time; full-time jobs; boring experiments... impossible to count in clearly. For we have been surrounded by such a large numbers of troubles, why can't we throw all the burdens away and enjoy even a small period of time without homework, examinations and papers? After short time relaxation, we are supposed to be full of energy to devote ourselves into new tough tasks.(这一段貌似跑题了,和主题联系不紧密。)

To sum up, a research would be valuable if the researcher is really interested in it and is willing to put an avalanche of energy
(我只找到了“an avalanche of mail似雪片般飞来的邮件”) and time to work for it. Our goal is to find some happiness from our sweat, that's enough.

关于那个an avalanche of的用法是我的XDF老师提供的,意思就是a large amount of吧,如果我没记错。。
还有就是套话的问题,因为我感觉后面自己的句子都比较低端,就希望能在开头里弄的看起来工整一点了,自己也没感觉是不是过头了。如果是真的太多了的话,以后还是要改改。。
