A7. The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illness. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."
In the argument, the author claims that the residents should vote for Ann Green, because if they elect Ann Green to be the mayor, the environment problem will certainly be solved. To bolster this suggestion, the author said Ann Green is a member of the Green Earth Coalition and Frank Braun, another candidate for the election, is a member of the Clearview town council which is not protecting our environment. The author's assumption is base on several factors such as the number of factories in Clearview has doubled during last year, air pollution has became worse and the number of the respiratory patients in local hospital has increased by 23 percent. However, I find this argument dubious on several grounds.
In the first place, the arguer's conclusion depends on one major assumption that the current council must be responsible for the worsening of their local environment. Yet, I find this claim is to some extent specious. There is no sufficient evidence to prove that the factories that established in Clearview last year are related to the environment problems directly. Perhaps, all these factories are belonging to information technology industry which produces less pollution to our environment. Even if the factories indeed would damage the local environment, they could also have their proper pollution discharge systems and the strict limits which was placed by the Clearview town council. Hence, there remain no obvious link between the quantitative increase of the factory and the worsening of Clearview's environment.
Likewise, the author assumes too hastily that it is the air pollution causes the fact that the number of the respiratory patients in local hospital has increased by 25 percent. There might be some other factors bring about this phenomenon like the population of this town have tremendously increased, consequently, it is normal to have some more patients in local hospital. Or perhaps there is a respiratory patient who brought the infectious virus into Clearview. Hence, it is the infectious illness made the respiratory patients increased but not the air pollution. Without ruling out these possible scenarios, the author simply cannot convince me that the environment of Clearview has became worse.
Even if the environment problem of Clearview has became more and more serious. The author fails to provide the link between Frank Braun and the worsening of their environment. The arguer truly oversimplifies the various possibilities there might be. Perhaps the current members of Clearview town council really did what they could but the environmental tendency of worsening was beyond controllable, so there is no warrant that Ann Green can do better than Frank Braun. Moreover, even if the current Clearview town council are not protecting our environment, it does not necessarily mean that Frank Braun hold the same opinion. Maybe, Frank Braun do want to protect our environment but had no enough strength in local government, therefore, if he become the mayor, with deeper understanding of Clearview conditions, he can do better than Ann Green in improving the Clearview's environment.
In sum, the author's conclusion is based on a series of unsubstantiated assumptions which renders the conclusion unconvincing as it stands. In order to have a more persuasive about the suggestion that the local residents should vote for Ann Green, the arguer need to reconfirm the real conditions of Clearview's environment. After that, the author should carry out more thorough study about Frank Braun and the current council. Otherwise, this weak reasoning process can not convince me.A |
