TOPIC: ISSUE116 - "With the growth of global networks in such areas as economics and communication, there is no doubt that every aspect of society-including education, politics, the arts, and the sciences-will benefit greatly from international influences."

With the arrival of information era, the communication among people from different cultures is becoming much more frequent, no matter in the realms of education, politics, the arts and the sciences. However, this globalization trend may not serve to benefit every aspect of society.
To begin with, when it comes to the area of education and sciences, few people would deny the merit of globalization. Students have great interest and curious about those foreign cultures. With the global networks, they can broaden their view, advance their knowledge and grow in understanding of humanity; after all, that is the ultimate objectives of education. For example, by surfing on the Internet, Chinese students whose major is politics can know American’s opinion toward China-America relationship. He/She will surly have the chance to review this topic in a brand new perspective and he/she can have more comprehensive and insightful understanding by chatting with American native people through MSN or BBS, or by posting own ideas on Wikipedia , all of which are the production of the growth of global networks. Now, let us turn to the sciences. By sharing a public data base, scientists from different can cooperate closely just like they are actually working in the same laboratory, and it is such cooperation among scientists greatly improve the development of science. One example aptly illustrate this point involve the Human Genome Project. Scientists from 6 countries lucubrated for one goal----the map of human genome. Given the limited economic and anthropogenic resource, no one country can achieve this grueling and extremely complex task alone. With the endeavor of such a unprecedented global cooperation, the map of human genome turned a new page of sciences.
In the second place, whether globalization benefit politics remains a complicate issue. Admittedly, international cooperation in the purpose of solving environmental problem and terrorism are effective and positive. For instance, at first glance, international division of labor seems to be an efficient way to production. However, it actually improves the efficiency of production while ignoring the certain undesirable consequences. Developed country tends to establish new factories which greatly threat the environment in developing country for its own sake. Moreover, the policies of developed countries encourage businessmen to sell products with relatively low price but high quality to those developing countries. The advantage of their products due to their high technologies is significant for sure. However, such products will inevitably crush the commercial barrier and damage the native manufactures and industries; after all, few people will prefer a local product over such imported one, given its low price and high quality.
In the third place, to some extend, arts, especially traditional ones are victims of the globalization. Let us take music as an example. Today's youth tend to ignore traditional music because they think that it is smart to run after popular music. Hip-Pop and R&B are prevailing over the whole world. Therefore, young people are likely to shift their cynosures from traditional music or classical music to these modern popular music considering their global influence and popularity. This trend is understandable since few people want to be the minority. For example, in China, it is not uncommon to see that students are crazy about the international singing stars and have little interest in Chinese traditional music. In fact, most of them cannot understand what their idols are singing, but they still stick to their Cds and relevant products because they think that to idolize a international star is fashion and cool. As a result, fewer and fewer people pay any attention to Chinese traditional music and hence its very survival is severely threatened.
To sum up, whether globalization is beneficial depends on the characteristic of the area it affects. Forgoing the merit brought by globalization in education and technologies development, developed and developing countries should strive to understand other's economic and politics legitimate concern. In addition, policies are needed to ensure the diversity of culture and prevent the diminishment of traditional arts.
[我觉得觉得自己写得很拖沓。。因为最后艺术部分我还想分2个部分来写的。第二段的scinence和education是否应该分开来呢? 时间很难达到要求。。焦急ing>_<) |
