Education will be truly effective when it is specifically design to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.

Admittedly, truly effective education should dig out the distinct characteristics and talent of each student and serve individuals according to their different needs to the largest degree. Nevertheless, as the educational resources are limited in reality, it is impossible and infeasible to design an educational system to cultivate each individual according to their varied interests and needs.

I concede that today’s society is a booming era of “Individualism”. People begin to pay more attention to characteristic and the potential that distinguish you from the other people, that finally defines you as who you are. This trend can also be found in education systems. However, most schools and colleges nowadays are still carrying out general education system, which almost treat each student alike disregarding their interests and talents. Consequently, graduates have to compete with their peels in the almost same fields, and render many of which to be just mediocre. In the high school that I was educated, courses like archaeology are limited. This severely harms the cultivation of students’ interests in these courses and makes it difficult to discern whether the student has talent or interest in these spheres. Even if the student finds he or she is enthusiastic about archaeology, in all likelihood, he or she may have to regard it as an hobby, due to unavailable of fundamental instructions and education ,and keep the pace with the others. Considering the trend and the need for specific education, I strongly support that truly effective education should caters to individuals.

Nonetheless, this kind of education is almost infeasible, at least in today’s educational environment. As each student may has distinctive interest, ranging from metaphysics to flower arrangement, it is impossible to equip each student with a corresponding teacher. Finding a proper teacher remains a big problem at first. The salary of so large faulty and the expenses of equipment, books, materials needed in each course may become so high that the school can hardly afford. Additionally, the regulation and evaluation of students will not be as easy as it seems to be today. For example, the enrollment of college will be a knotty problem as in no way can we compare the students who study metaphysics with those who study flower arrangement. As a result, the educational system can scarcely offer this specific-education mode.

Even under this specifically designed-education system, new problems will also arise unavoidably. For one thing, one problem lies in the fact that interests do not remain constant to many people for a long period of time, especially to students who cannot judge well to what extent is he or she interested in the major and whether he or she will pursue it with efforts and perseverance. If he or she changes his interest, then the forgoing education may lose its value and the time is wasted to some extent. For another thing, the students who are specifically educated according to their interests and needs may lose essential knowledge that will impair their future development. As known to all , the basic training of music will enhance one’s self cultivation and purify one’s soul. The fundamental knowledge of history and literal arts will furnish people to be broaden-minded and erudite. The proficiency in mathematics will enable people to think more critically and reason more logically. These abilities may be largely weakened in specific education.

To sum up, I accept the idea that education should value students’ talent and interests. Some educational institutions can launch more programs
and classes to meet students’ varied needs. However, the general education system shouldn’t shoulder the major responsibility for specific education as it has its primary goal to cultivate all-round people required by society and its own inherent limitations.
