Issue 170:
The surest indicator of a great nation isnot the achievement of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but the generalwelfare of all its people.
I concede with the author’s broad assertionthat the most important indicator of a great nation is not the achievement ofits rulers, artists, of scientists. Furthermore, the general welfare is trulyone of the chief indicators when evaluating a country. The core indicator, however, is not neither the achievement nor the welfare. In my opinion, it is cultureimpact of a nation that is the most important standard of a nation.
The achievement of the rulers, artists, scientists of a nation refers to the indicator of the elites’ generation. To a country, such indicator shows its imagination to foreign people. When wemention a great nation, the first affair in our mind must be the achievement inscience, art, thought, politics, and the representatives in such fields. For instance, when we were talking about Germany, we would not miss A. Einstein andhis Relativity, Karl Marx and his thoughts about communism, and also Beethovenand his symphonies. And also, native Germans will be so proud of theseimaginations that they are willing to be introduced to every foreigner, for suchimagination refers to the position of a country in history, as well as itsimpact to foreigners and other nations.
On the other hand, however, theseachievements cannot revealthe development of for the fundamental level of a country. It is general welfareof a nation that represents the bottom level of progress. Welfare shows howhuman’s basic rights are protected and the living standard in a country. Theachievement of rulers, artists, and scientists and be sustained by thegovernment or grade in power, yet welfare should be supported by the wholeconstruction of a nation, including political, economic, and legal system. Canyou imagine a country with a large part of population living in privation aswell as glories achievement of scientists, rulers, or artists? Such countrieshave really happened in history, and all of them could not avoid the destiny ofperishing in civil war. In such cases, all of these nations cannot be called as“great nation”. Therefore, general welfare is an important indicator of great nation.
Nevertheless, such two indicators are not opposite; indeed, they can be harmonized. Based ona foundation of culture, all these can be treated as aspects of culture of anation. Culture, which is a much wider concept, refers to the living style andthinking style of a nation. For instance, we can say “romance” is part ofFrance culture, which means not only romance spreads in every corner ofFrenchmen’s life, but also shows clearly in works of French artists, rulers, even scientists. Both former two indicators influence culture very well inthinking level and consequently in acting level. When a country is creatingsplendid achievements of rulers, artists and scientists, it must make sure thatgeneral welfare is solid enough. On the other hand, these achievements could beused into improve social welfare direct or indirectly. When these twoindicators have been harmonized together within a way of inter-promoting, the cultureimpact of a nation would become greater and greater, which would consequently bring this nation into ranks of “great nation”. Thus, culture impact, which containsindicators of both elites and foundation, is the most important dimension inevaluating great nation. |
