TOPIC: ISSUE197 - "The material progress and well-being of one country are necessarily connected to the material progress and well-being of all other countries."

As the trend of globalization becomes more and more intensive, one country's material progress and well-being have been inevitably interwoven with those of other countries. To some extend, no one country is isolated from the others and no one country's development of science, technology and economics is independent from others. In this light, all nations should shift the cynosure from their own interest to general interest. Otherwise, one's progress may be other's disaster.

To begin with, it is not uncommon to see that countries gain benefits from the successful operation of international organization. One example aptly illustrates this point involved OPEC, which is comprised of several petroleum-exporting countries. Members of OPEC negotiate about crucial event such as the change of oil price, the amount of exporting and so forth. Its primary principle is to make a best decision and judgment which can guarantee the members' interest individually or collectively. These petroleum-exporting countries do not have to worry about that their profits will decrease dramatically considering that some of them sell their oil in a extremely low price. Such undercut competition would not longer exist because it is detrimental in long run. And may be it is such undue competitions among countries motivate the establishment of OPEC, which eliminate undercut competition and ensure the general economic welfare.

Moreover, the cooperation between countries also serves to accelerate the development of sciences and technology which usually spread over boarders and finally benefit our whole human beings. For example, the Human Genome Project, which involved six countries' leading scientists. It's so a complex and grueling task that even now, no one country can accomplish this project alone. With the endeavor of scientists from different countries, the map of human genome was drawn which turn a new page of the biology, informatics and so forth. This project also share lights on the merit of cooperation between countries. In fact, such beneficial 'connection' between countries will skyrocket considering the increasing complexity of a scientific breakthrough that demands funding and human resource all of which a single country cannot afford.

Forgoing these two provisos, most relationships between countries are synergistic. Such relationship sometimes is reciprocal, sometimes is detrimental. For instance, Japan is a country where raw material and labor force are extremely sparse. Almost all of the raw material its manufactures are imported from countries such like Brazil and China. And many Japan governments encourage their companies to settle new factories in other developed countries. Understandably, both China and Brazil gain much profit from the commerce. Moreover, Japan in turn pour their high-tech products to market of China and Brazil. At first glance, the commercial relationship between them seems to be a win-win situation. However, those people in developed countries flock to buy these Japanese products because of their high quality and low price. Understandably, these high-tech products crush local market and impede the development of local high-tech industry. In respond to this trend, governments of developed countries enact policies to heighten the commerce barriers. At last, no one appears to be a beneficiary because residents in developed countries have no chance to buy Japanese high-tech products and Japanese might risk losing a commercial pattern which can provide valuable raw material. However, it is tempting to think that if there lie adequate communications between Japan and these developed countries, things may turn to a optimistic side. In this light, all leaders of nations should review their diplomat decisions in a new respect.
Understanding of other countries' legitimate concern such as stability of economy and politics sovereign is a requisite of a beneficial international relationship.

To sum up, the speaker is fundamentally correct. We gain both benefits and pains from such a interwoven web between countries. For matter, any selfish agendas or strategies are disdainful. Countries should try to understand each other. Otherwise, the web would be comprised of malice and trick rather than cooperation and common interest.
