The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare.
We are so frustrated nowadays not by the absence of choice but by not knowing how to make our best choice, and when some people claim that they have on no choice, it is not true that they are out of choice, but they are confined by certain restrains to make their most desired choice or the options offered to them are not as good as they wish. So the statement is fundamentally right, the situation of no choice, though exists, is very rare.
The development of economy, science, and technology enriched enriches our options of choice. And we are entitled by the law to make our own choice in a democracy society(I think the choice should be restricted here). We make our choice form daily life normal ones (这个你的词好)such as what to eat what to dress to big decisions such as getting married or stay staying single, to be a member of certain religious group or be an atheist, to be a supporter of some political party parties or just stay out of politics. It is not that we are out of choice that confusing us, it is that we don't really know what we want for our life that troubles us.
But there were days when people are deprived of making their own choice because of lack of law or because of unjust laws. In ancient china the so called laws were set by the emperor(去the用复数,没特指哪个皇帝不用定冠词,以下同理)(皇帝用zhe 是特指,也是可以的) to for his own benefits.(for表目的,或者用to meet)(我用的不对) People under the ruling of emperor were just conducting the wills of the emperor; there was no negotiation about making their own choice. And it was also true as to Jews in Germany under the rule of Hitler; they were deprived of the basic right of life as human beings not to say other choices; and in American before civil rights, black person had no choice of veto, they could not chose to serve in the army, they also had no choice of being served as their white peer.(serve有对待的意思吗? And some times the option is decided by the law to the best benefits of the whole society which leaves its people no choice. For example, the one-child-policy Family Planning in china, It is planned stipulated by the law that one couple could only have one child no matter how many children they want. The law is set for the benefits of the whole society for the country just don't have enough space and resources to support its increasing population. And also the compulsory education law in china(这个,compulsory解释成义务,不是强制,以前喜欢读郑渊洁的书,他儿子郑亚旗就没怎么上过学,所以你这例子不大好吧,九年义务教育是强制的,法律规定,我不知道为什么郑亚旗没上过), children have to finish the basic education no matter they want it or not. The law was set under the assumption that only after this education can one be qualified for a good citizen and it is to the individual’s best for them to live better in the society.
And except the restrains set by the laws nowadays people still complain about not having a choice. But as I understand it, it is not that they have no choice, it is the options are not the best in satisfying their desire. A student may complain that he has no choice but to study hard and pass the examinations so as to graduate. But the truth is he has the choice of not to take the examination and don't graduate. The absence of choice here is caused by the hope that he doesn't need to study hard but could still graduate. The choice of study hard and graduate or the choice of not study and don't graduate are not satisfied(by……这句话没说完)(说完了,these two choices are not satisfying,不过我还是错了). But one can’t have his cake and eat it too, or surely he will be out of choice. And I assume that an unreasonable choice should not be called choice. Another situation I heard people complain about they don't have choice is in the election veto. The candidate candidates they prefer are(主谓一致!) not on the option list so they can’t chose to veto vote(看到这才发现你原来搞错了veto和vote,我刚没闹明白你怎么前面说黑人不能投否决票,虽然事实确实如此)(这个真是不好意思打错了,自己也没看出来) for him. But the election veto is to present the choice of the whole community, and personal choice should give way to the overall benefits. But still he could give up his right to chose among these unsatisfied candidates, it is also a choice.
To sum up, in a non-democracy society, its people were deprived of choice and in certain particular history period; whereas a democracy society could also be unfair to some group groups on that because (on that 也可以用的,不过because可能更顺,我这样用习惯了)it leaves them no choice for some basic human rights. Besides these, when people are complaining about lack of choice, they are not actually out of choice, they are just fail to satisfy unreasonable desire(这句话说得好绕) or want to make his choice over community choice. Except these situations, we usually have plenty of choice choice no matter in daily life options or in big decisions.
(sigh。。。
