When comes to a worthy goal, the means taken to attain it is much concerned to a point where a wide range of discussion has been aroused. The author claims that any means is justifiable as long as the goal is worthy to be achieved. In weighing up both the prospective benefits and potential risks, I side on the opposite, and in my view this extreme position misses the point entirely.
Firstly, we need to ensure which kinds of goals are worth attaining clearly. Having different experiences and backgrounds, we each have our own values and set various tasks for themselves. It might be the case that what you think as a worthy one in others' views is worthless. It also might be the case that your "worthy" goals are, conversely, what both the law and morality do not allow to attain. For instance, one, who has mental illness, believes killing lovely animals and people cruelly are a great way to feel satisfied, so that his worth goal is becoming an efficient killer. These worthless or even harmful goals are forbidden attaining, nevertheless, does it means that it is justifiable to achieve other kinds of goals in any way? Common sense and experience tells us the answer is, of course, no.
Turn first to politics. The presidential election is held every four years in America, and for all the candidates, to become the president at last is their worthy goals. And the election is on the basis of fair competition. Some means such as giving attractive speech, taking a myriad of measures to protect environment and promote the economic development, holding your election manifesto, publishing your future design and putting some necessary advertisement of yourself in the newspaper are reasonable and should be encouraged. But some other methods like spreading the rumors of the competitors and using spies to steal their election plans is improper. The Watergate is a good case in point. Nixon, the former president of American and the protagonist of Watergate, ordered his helper to fix a tapping device in Democratic Party office and eventually had to hand in his resignation after this matter was found and reported to the public.
Turn next to technology. Each researcher must feel like gaining some excellent achievements in their own fields. These are their worthy goals and a great deal of scientists and professors spend their lifelong time on them. It is proper to achieve them in the ways of doing experiments again and again, of reading a good many books and thinking deeply and seriously. However, some professors complete theses and essays by faking data instead of accurate statistics and plagiarizing other one's achievements. The typical represent one is Huang Yuxi, a Korea Professor, who asserted that he had a new great discovery and was the pride of all Korea. Nonetheless, the essay's data was found faked, the discovery was meaningless as well some months later. This is an unjustifiable means to attain goals and the ending must be failure.
Turn last to business. Making money as much as possible is the common worthy goal for businessmen. However, in order to attain this goal, a few businessmen take measures such as smuggling, tax evasion to decrease the expenses which are all disobeying the law and lead to a harmful influence on national economy. Some other ones trick customs buying their products by false advertisements and vague words to introduce the products' characteristics. These are all unjustifiable.
In sum, the speaker's assertion is absolutely wrong. Although the goal is worthy, the means taken to attain it should be benefit to both individual and society. Not any means is justifiable for achieving such worthy goals.
