104. "It is primarily through formal education that a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears."

如果一个文化想要它认为好的理念永世长存而摈弃它厌恶的理念,主要是通过正规的教育。

It is always said where there is a different culture, there is a unique university. The origin and growth of each university is accompanied by the beginning, thriving, changing of a culture. The author advocates that a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears primarily through formal education with which I fundamentally agree for the reason that formal education reflects the core idea of a culture. However, I must supplement to consummate the speaker's point of contention.

First of all, formal education plays an increasingly important role in socializing each new generation. Through education people learn concepts such as right, wrong, probity and chicanery. Traditional education is a long-established and generally accepted custom that is found in schools that society deems appropriate. Undoubtedly the majority of children receive formal education no matter they like it or not and finally they will be assimilate by the adults. For instance, the Japanese students prefer keep silence in the classes rather than being active even if they transfer to schools abroad. That is not because neither they don't like talking instinctively nor being silence is cool. After years of formal education in Japan, they have accustomed to the basic rules of Japan culture in which regard chatting, questioning and laughing are forbidden. Thus, people inherit their own culture such as morality, spirit, language and the view of the world through formal education.

It is true that education promotes the ideas a culture favors while discrediting others since education is also under the influence of culture and controlled by the government in power. Well-established norms and traditions are always included in school curricula, concepts such as ethics, national laws, values and world outlook. For example, women are not supposed to be in positions of engineers, solders or some other position associated with technology and danger, because in the depth of our minds we insist that men should take the responsibility of feeding their families and defending invasion. After year of formal education, these kind of views have rooted in our brain, and it is just the idea our culture favors. Even after the movement for women’s rights, most girls prefer to major in medicine, art and nursery, for example, which almost have no relations with industrial. Consider another example about formal education in Germany. In the modern world, German as other people all around the world will definitely against their government to wage an aggressive war. However, during the World War Two, people in Germany dedicated themselves to invade innocent countries under the leadership of Hitler. Why do people in different times hold totally different opinions about the war? That is because they have contrast ethics and world outlook. In order to conquer the whole world, Hitler and his government advocated the theory about conquering the world primarily through formal education. People are easily moved during years of formal education.

However, the significance the family and other institution play in education should not be minimized. In addition to formal education, there are many other influences that play an equal role in developing civic values. The culture of the West, especially the U.S.A, is accepted by the majority not only through formal education in America and other west countries, but also through movies, music, fictions, paintings and alternative education. In the movie Forrest Gump, audiences are inevitably moved by the braveness, optimism, goodness and honest of Forrest, which is just the spirit of American culture. We have to acknowledge that it is really an effective way to perpetuate the ideas it favors.

To be certain, both formal education and other alternative methods help a culture to advocate ideas it likes and discredit others it hates more or less, and neither can take the place of the other nor be replaced. But, due to the analysis mentioned above, we may safely draw the conclusion that formal education is the primary choice of a culture to publicize its theory.
