Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks
upon the accepted wisdom of the time.

Do important truths could attack upon the accepted wisdom of the time,
and cause outrage? While we have to admit its complexity and
controversial, there do exist some examples and evidences which might
lead some credence to the assertion that truths especially important
truths might always attack the accepted wisdom of the time.

The first example in point is Copernicus' heliocentric theory.
Copernicus was the first person to propose that the sun, and not the
earth, was at the center of the universe, which heavily attacked upon
the accepted wisdom at that time that the earth was at the center of the
universe, and the sun revolve around the earth. Copernicus' theory
caused great outrage to Catholic Church and the public, and as a result,
anyone who supporting Copernicus' theory was oppressed with the
exception of Copernicus himself, because he might have tried to avoid
the potential outrage from Catholic Church and the public by waiting
until the year of his death to publish his theory. Later, however,
Copernicus's theory was soundly proved by Galileo, who, with the help of
his telescope, proved that the earth does, in fact, revolve around
the sun. Obviously, this example could well illustrate the truth that
truths might challenge the accepted wisdom, and thus cause some
outrage.

Darwin's origin of species is another example which could well support
my position. Darwin shocked the world with his theory of evolution as
propose as Origin of Species. Although his ideas are widely accepted
today, and greatly benefit us in many fields especially in agriculture,
the theory that species could have evolved from an entirely different
species caused outrage from those believing that all living creatures
were created by God. But it might always be the minority who hold the
truths, and we are enjoying the fruits brought by his theory today.

However, critics of my position may argue that there are many truths
which well fit the accepted wisdom, and thus cause no outrage from the
public. I would argue that those truths might have their basement on the
accepted wisdom or theory, or the truths would not attack the
accepted wisdom due to our limited scope our current knowledge. They
might be proved to be contrary or wrong some day in the future. As a
matter of fact, the issue is a complex and controversial one, but it
might be true that important truths might attack or challenge the
accepted wisdom.

In conclusion, through the examples and analysis above, it might have
been shown that the cost to publish an important truth might involve
attacking the accepted wisdom and causing outrage. But it could infuse
vitality to science and expand our knowledge, and thus advance our
development both on society and technology.
