In this era, scientific and technological changes leading to increasing social complexity, and it apparently seems not possible for those in power to keep pace with times forever. Hence, I totally agree with the speaker's first claim that in any profession, the leaders should step down after several years. However, I find the speaker's second conclusion that the surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership to some extent too extreme. In my view, whether an enterprise can attain success or not depends on subjective conditions of its outer environment and their leaders' capacity.
In the first place, with the social development in the field of politics, economy, science and technology, our lives have changed dramatically. The same thing happened in the professions including politics, education and government. For the sake of keeping pace with times, we cannot rely on one particular leader, and oppositely, the leader should be clear of this truth and step down voluntarily. For example, General George Washington, who is seen by American as the "father of our country", had been elected as the president of America for three times, however, he refused to continue to serve as president after two terms. He once remarked that (and I paraphrase): “I made numerous mistakes during my terms, and the country needs another president to correct my mistakes before they become too late to be corrected.” There is no man without defect, the new leader would not only correct the mistakes made by the former leader but also bring some new ideas and values.
However, we should be aware of the fact that revitalization through new leadership is not the warrant for a success. Success requires various conditions, and I divided these conditions into two respects, the subjective conditions and the objective conditions. Firstly, for any enterprise, the outer environment is significantly crucial and these conditions related to the destiny of the enterprise directly. For instance, in the preceding period of The American War of Independence, all sorts of domestic business in America are hindered by the British government. Under this special circumstance, the domestic enterprises could never succeed. As a result, to achieve opportunity for developing their own tea business, American people planed the Boston Tea Party which is taken as the beginning of The American War of Independence. Therefore, to have an advantageous environment is a necessary condition for a enterprise's prosperity.
On the other hand, a new leadership does not necessarily mean a good leadership, no matter in a company or in a school, the leader's capacity can be seen as the objective conditions for the whole enterprise's success. The speaker notices the fact that an enterprise could benefit from a proper leader, while fails to consider negative influence can a incompetent leader makes. Especially in some family firms, the manager prefer to choose his relatives as his successor, nonetheless, due to the limitation of choices, the successor’s capacity is under doubt. It is awfully possible that the incompetent successor would ruin the enterprise during his leadership.
To sum up, as far as I see it, those in power should step down after several years’ leadership, meanwhile, it is sagacious for them to pick a proper successor. However, all this remains cannot warrant an enterprise’s prosperity due to the unknown environment and situations they will face in the future. In short, it is unilateral to assert that the surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership. |
