题目:ARGUMENT149 - The following is a memorandum from the director of personnel to the president of Get-Away Airlines.

"Since our mechanics are responsible for inspecting and maintaining our aircraft, Get-Away Airlines should pay to send them to the Quality-Care Seminar, a two-week seminar on proper maintenance procedures. I recommend this seminar because it is likely to be a wise investment, given that the automobile racing industry recently reported that the performance of its maintenance crews improved markedly after their crews had attended the seminar. These maintenance crews perform many of the same functions as do our mechanics, including refueling and repairing engines. The money we spend on sending our staff to the seminar will inevitably lead to improved maintenance and thus to greater customer satisfaction along with greater profits for our airline."

Although, the reasoning of the director seems cogent at first glance, and the thinking for the sake of the company really
worths admiring, there are some flaws in the both the premise and conclusion, which will be illustrated in turn.


Mulling over the report, the reliableness of the report firstly occur in my mind.Does any expert provide evidence to demostrate the reality of the report? Is it a report which research only few areas and cannot stand for the national condition? Are the crews included representive for the whole crews? Without provide more fact answering these questions, it is not convinced that the senimar, in truth, betters the performance of the crews.^

In addition, the assertion that "these maintenance crews perform many of the same funcitons as do our mechanics" remain vague. What is the definition of "many"? Half? sixty percent? The direction should do more research to provide a exact number. What's more, the same fuctions the crews do not necessarily equal the same increasing of performance. Without considering other elements influening the performance, such as the difference of the machines and environment, it is too hasty to get the conclusion.Perhaps the different environment resulting in the opposite effect of the seminar.


Finally, even if both of the premises are reliable, it is imprudent to get the conclusion, that the seminar will lead to improving
maintenance and greatering customer satisfaction and profits. There are
a lot of factor affecting the maintenance, customer satisfaciton and profits, without taking them into consideration

Take the issue of profit as an example. The final profit relies on the cost and revenue. However, there are exact compassion of the potential cost and revenue of the seminar in the memo. Without that, we cannot get the conclusion that the suggestion will lead the company to the future of profit.

In sum, there is reason to believe the loyalty of the director. However, there is no reason to the take the suggestion just by the information provided by the memo. To improve the effectiveness of the memo, the director should give more information in detail showing the reality of the report and the similarity of the two companies. To prove the suggestion will lead to better performance of the crews, customer satisfaction and the profit, the director need to do more research to get the exact number. (466)
