153. "Students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
Should students bring certain skepticism to whatever they study and question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively? Aside from some certain circumstances in which undue skepticism can impede learning, in my point of view, skepticism arouse interest and curiosity, therefore, it is fundamental to our study and scientific exploration.
Firstly, for a student, skepticism is quite beneficial to their study. To bring certain skepticism to our study means to think deliberately about the things we learn, which will in turn enhance the effectiveness of our study. I can take one of the most excellent students in my class as an example. For the subjects such as mathematics, he always go to the teacher to ask and discuss questions after class, because he always wonder how to deduce the formulae and theorems the teacher introduces in class, or sometimes, he may doubt that the process of proving certain formulae and theorems the teacher provides in class to be unjustified. Through questioning the teacher, his confusion can always be solved while at the same time. What he believes in is that he can always have a deeper understanding of the knowledge through skepticism about the knowledge and discussion with the teachers. On the contrary, if we passively accept the knowledge taught by teachers, we usually cannot remember the knowledge clearly and understand it deeply. Therefore, I believe skepticism is of great importance for a profound awareness of the knowledge we learn.
Secondly, skepticism has always been a major drive for scientific exploration. If it was not the questioning of common phenomena and existing classical theories, scientists will not be able to make breakthroughs and human society cannot develop so fast. Newton Isaac wondered why the apple fell down, which phenomena almost everyone can observe but almost everyone takes for granted. With this skepticism, Newton discovered the famous law of universal gravitation. Galileo Galilei is not content with the classical theory established by
Aristoteles that the heavier objects fall faster, and, through accurate experiments, he meant the unimpeded fall of a body, and proposed the law of free fall. It is obvious that skepticism has play an important role in the development of human society, without it, the spark of truth cannot be enlightened, and mankind may still live in the darkness. As for us students, to foster skepticism will help us a lot in later life for seeking truth and pushing the limits of our horizons.
However, important as skepticism is, we should also be aware of its shortcomings. Especially for a student whose knowledge is quite little, skepticism may impede learning, since those students always do not have the ability to fully understand what they are taught or what they observes. Therefore, in the process of studying, students should also be aware that their ability is limited and sometimes accept the knowledge given by teachers despite of the confusion may be their best choice. However, even so, students of any age should be encouraged to reason the problems they encounter, to have their own point of view of the things they observe and to ask “why” and “why not”.
To sum up, once we are equipped with the necessary knowledge, we should learn to question, for it inspires our potential and encourages us to explore the unknown world. Through skepticism and the creative thinking involved from it, our knowledge increases and we become able to push the limitations of mankind |
