This era sees an unprecedented attentionpaying on research.
Governments spendlarge amount of money annually on hiring(政府hiring?不太好吧,应该是allocate fundings for research吧)scientists and experts from differentareas to conduct various research; Funds are established by businessmen andcelebrity to encourage exploring and inventing. The concept that money spent onresearch is always worthwhile becomes increasingly popular. To some extent, this concept is reasonable.
Talking about the benefit and profit ofresearch, one of the most typical examples may be the research in informationand high technology, which bring(s
) great fortune to our economy as well as to oursociety. The whole world is linked together and people are becoming more andmore effective. Knowledge, resources are shared on the Internet; Numerousinformation are accessible at once; Meetings can be held online so people fromall over the world can gather together quickly without spending lots of time ontraffics; Runtime and onerous jobs are done by the computer. Meanwhile, therelevant industrials as IT industry and companies as Microsoft, Google andYahoo thrive with the help of these technologies. There is little doubt that suchresearches and inventions contribute to the rapid development of our ages.
Even some researches which seem too academic and are irrelevant toour life are also worthwhile(再加上一句写这样的research很值得投资,会显得更紧密,或者在该段尾升华). Since no subject is isolated, any researches, whether their results have direct influence or not, are great progress inenriching human knowledge and view. To take history as an example, althoughresearch on historical records and events may not bring direct profit, byinvestigating in the past evolution does help us a lot in learning more aboutourselves, our society and our environment. Furthermore, only through continualexploration and research can we correct and perfect our study.(感觉这句在这里出现很突兀,主要看这后面的例子觉得与这段的Top sensetence 没什么直接联系) An apt illustrationmight be the degradation of Pluto. The long hold belief of the Nine Planets isjustified as wrong with scientists’ intensive and continual study in Astronomy. Thus, research is not only worthwhile but also fundamental.(这段的中心是要说明money spent on some researches, whose results are indirect to our life, is also worthwhile .对吧? 那么你应该在论证这样的academic research 的重要性时不要忘了回归到题中的Investment。语言和论证思路都很清晰。)
Yet, when we look into research as thenuclear weapons, few people would agree that money paid on them is goodinvestments. Even witnessed the catastrophic result of the first atomic bomb inHiroshima, Nagasaki was destroyed by the second bomb only 3 days later. Besidesthe inhumane wars and huge loss on nature they have caused,(去掉) all of us are stillliving under the shadow of these weapons now since any countries might sufferthe same fate with Nagasaki. Governments operated many expensive programs toprevent themselves from being attacked; meanwhile, they have to invent more fatefulweapons to show their strength and power. Such ironic circulation informs that sincegreedy and selfish lay in human’s nature, the result of a research can also bedisastrous.(同样的应该接着论述投资这样的research不利于社会的Welfare之类的,所以对于这样的研究投资时应三思而后行)
In conclusion, on the academic andknowledge level, I strongly agree that money spent on research is almost a goodinvestment. However, research would also become a nightmare if it is used improperly. After all, if knowledge can be a knife, then research and exploration are thehone, using it to hunt or to suicide is determined by our human beings(漂亮!)(结尾段写的很好,既重申了观点,也有较好的升华)./i]
