TOPIC: ISSUE7 - "The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records."
WORDS: 506
[Implication]: Video records are more important than written records.
[Position]: In a few cases, this is true.
1. Video records ....good...is playing an important role in daily life and work, has become a form of documentation...
a picture is equal to one thousand words...
good at criminal investigation, security monitoring, demonstration...etc...
2. Though video records so good, it can't replace written documentation.
Written docs: easy to keep and store; more accurate description; low cost; easy to search and compile; share and distribution;......
Video records always need captions or scriptures to help people understand... these are just written works!
3. [Conclusion]: Video records do help fulfill more vivid documentation and it is important somewhere. Written docs will still be the most important form of documentation.....
Is video camera a more important form of documentation than written records? Some people, along with the speaker may say "yes" to this question for the very reason that the video tapes actually provide us a more accurate and vivid live. In my point of view, the accuracy is just one of the factors which contribute to a comprehensive record of contemporary life. Written records, though lack of accuracy, cannot be underestimated due to its ability of touching the bottom of one's heart.
Admittedly, we got lots of enjoyment from home videos. Simply clicking on a video camera, the beach we played on, the smile on children's face and the ridiculous thing friends had ever done, all of which could be recorded accurately and vividly.Every Sunday afternoon, families gather together to watch these home videos. People seem to prefer video camera over diary book to record what happen in daily lives. Understandably, families tend to review the home videos which recorded the funny moments in the last Halloween rather than to see grandma's diary book which also recorded these funny moments. In fact, the advantages of video camera are so significant that which might explain why more and more people flock to buy film tickets instead of buying novels.
However, accuracy is not the only yardstick of a recording of contemporary life. Just watching the video, we cannot tell what the people involved in the image thinking and what only we can do is to guess his/her emotion form his/her behavior or talking. What's more, the limitations of video camera refrain it from recording a event comprehensively and insightfully since audiences can only get images from the screen. Fortunately, written records show its superiority over video camera in these two aspects.; after all, writer can insightfully touch people’s heart and record events which beyond the limitation of video camera.
Through the sentences, we stand to know what are the people thinking since writing is created by human beings, the words and sentences involved written records are more likely to strike resonance among people than mere images. By watching documentary films about the Second World War, we can realize the cruelty of the war from those miserable scenarios and have little acknowledge of populace's thinking. Would they feel extremely scared? Or would they lose their faith? Only by reading “Anne's Diary’’, we got to know the answers of those questions which cannot be answered by video. From this tiny book, we read the minds of this lovely little girl, who remained optimistic till death. We also learn how brave the Jews are in fighting against the Nazis. To the contrary, in a video camera, all of these seemingly trivial things are masked by the more “significant” events which are more attractive, conspicuous and easier to record for the photographer.
As shown above, we cannot say that video camera plays a more dominant role than written records. In fact, they are complement to each other. The accuracy of video camera and the depth and range of written records are all necessary parts of a real eminent recording. |
