Issue 22, “Many people believe that a few individuals or small groups (family, friends, teachers, celebrities, for example) have caused them to think and behave in the way they do. Yet it is always as a whole that defines us and our attitudes, not a few individuals.”
The speaker claims that the society is playing a more important role to affect and define the human’s attitudes, rather than the individual or small groups. Yet I do not agree the speaker’s claim by neglecting the influences on the people by individual, as the importance of society and individual are equal from my own perspective. Admittedly, the emphasis on the society influencing individuals by the speaker is reasonable, due to we are all living in a big community, but not the uninhabited island in the Robinson Cruises. Interactions are the palpable discrepancy between the above two extreme living styles. In the realm of society, we can put our face to the reality. Living in society means we are sharing the land with others, and certainly the behaviors of others involve not only John and Mary but also you. A case in point is an Arabic man can access United States by his free will in 1980’s, but nowadays the U.S. airport customs might inspect him exhaustively for the purpose of safety after 9.11 incident. It is the case that society change people’s life. But, in the realm of inexistence of society, naivety and ignorance might fall to us. A recluse in Himalaya might regard catapult as the powerful weapon in the world, because he doesn’t know a rifle can hit the target several kilometers outside. Moreover, as the epoch of globalization is coming, the significances of society are amplified and all of us cannot escape from it, including the polar bears in Arctic as the greenhouse effect making the sea level increased in these years.
What’s more, society is shaping our thought, value system, religion and morality in various aspects. Working in a metropolis one might regard efficiency as the priority when dealing problems, as a spread of bureaucracy in the society might cause the overall deprivation in the public values, even turning everyone into money-worshipers. Society undoubtedly changes us by self-assimilation to cater the social features. How can a drop of water in the oil tank be pure? It seems impossible. Hence, the infiltration function of society can make a great effect on us.
Nonetheless, the interactions between individuals are important either. Through communications even debates, we can absorb others’ prominent ideas and make our scope more comprehensive. Otherwise, our notions might boggle in lockstep and even become ossified. In my opinion, there are three major relationships between the interpersonal communications, which relevant backgrounds and plots are totally different. For our family members or parents, they act as torchbearers to teach us ethic and moral values, therefore probably they are influencing our value systems; for our teachers, they act as instructor to indoctrinate us the knowledge and develop our thought; for our friends and colleagues, their feats might create peer pressure for us, but nevertheless it would drive us to improve. The three relationships mentioned above affect our life essentially. Just watching the Grammy Award Ceremony, many award-winners gave speech on the stage by mainly acknowledging their parents, friends and fans for expressing gratitude. Another case is the best-selling author Dan Brown thanked his wife at the preface of Da Vinci Code who inspired him to write this prominent novel. In short, the supports and solicitudes by our acquaintance really have a big crush on us and nobody can deny this fact.
For the conclusion, the society and some individuals undoubtedly are the vital backgrounds and supporting actors in our autobiographical movie. Perhaps your spouse is an important role in the movie, but please do not underrate your hometown environment as only a three-second shot because the childhood experience might build your ingrate characteristics. |
