There is always no consensus when it comes to discuss the function of ethical and moral standards for leaders. The author suggests that an effective leader must possess the highest ethical and moral standards. Various factors show this suggestion is reasonable, especially in business world and political realm. It is no doubt that ethical and moral standards have become an essential requirement to public officials.
Firstly, in the business realm, the definition of effective leaders is whether he or she can get the maximal profits for the companies and employees while fulfilling the public moral and ethical obligations to their customers, the whole society as well as our environment. Undoubtedly, ethical and moral standards can help leaders to establish a more stable and consistent atmospheres for employees and enhance the companies’ reputation. What’s more, the leaders who possess high ethical and moral standards are doomed to get much profit than those who are lack of them. Considering Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple Corporation, who always get more revenues than his rivals. I think the key to his success is his sticks to some moral characters to his consumers all the time, like considerate thoughts and honesty, no matter how difficult to insist on in this competitive business world.
Secondly, in political realm we can see clearly that in any election, the leaders who has high ethical and moral standards tend to have more supporters. History is replete with such effective leaders. For example, George Washington, the first president of the Unites States, and Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding father of the United States, or Chairman Mao, the most outstanding leader in China history were all made greatest contribution to one nation's building and they all have many precious merits like perseverance and confidence, which represent high ethical and moral standards.
Conversely, the leaders who are lack of ethical or moral standards are doomed to fail in their leading lives, no matter in political or business area. Couple months ago, Toyota was charged with its bad quality and cheating behaviors to their consumers. I think the reason why Toyota was suffered from such a big loss is the CEO of Toyota didn’t apologize to their consumers as soon as possible and try to shirk their responsibilities. It is a behavior of dishonesty. Another example is Hitler, who was regarded as a warmonger by all the people, and had no ethical and moral standards at all. All of his considered are how to wage a war, or how to invade and destroy other countries. As a result, he and Nazi were failed in the World War Two.
Admittedly, sometime in extremely difficult situations, the leaders must sacrifice the ethical and moral standard to cater to the citizens’ interests or the further development of companies. Although these situations require them to make some tough choices beyond the boundaries of morality, in a long run, these sacrifices must have positive effects to society or to the whole nation as well as the companies. We can imagine that in order to protect a destiny of one nation or one company, some compromises should be done, like signing some unfair contracts to surrender, to cede territories, to pay an indemnity or to agree with incorporation. May some people hard to understand why the leaders do such things in present, they or their children will realize the deep meanings in the future.
In sum, due to all analysis and reasons mentioned above, it is undeniable that in order to be an effective leader, he or she must maintain a high ethical and moral standard, of course, not in anytime or under any circumstance. No matter the citizens or the consumers, all of them tend to choose the leaders who have the merits such as perseverance, honesty, or confidence, which are represented the high ethical and moral standards. Besides, we should analyze whether a leader possess the standard from a long-run perspective, not limited by their decisions in present.
