TOPIC: ISSUE8 - "It is often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public."
WORDS: 480 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2010-8-12 下午 04:03:36
Is it necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public, as the speaker claimed? Some people may say people should always tell the truth, especially for the leaders, while others may contend that under certain circumstance it could be acceptable for the political leaders to withhold information from the public. As far as I am concerned, I am inclined to agree the second viewpoint only when the leader have a comprehensive understanding of the whole issue and being able to make the correct decision.
To begin with, I acknowledge that people especially the political leader should have the basic moral standard such as honest, integrity. First, from a pragmatic point of view, it makes things easy when he/she is running for
their president. Being honest is a good manner that can win the trust and support form the public. No one will like a brag men. Second, the president have the responsibility to set a good example for the public especially the children and young people. If he/she failed to do so, then the morale of the nation will directly or indirectly be affected. Leaders who withhold information from the public or do
not act according to what he/she said will definitely lose the hearts of his/her people in the long run and in turn undermine not only his/her own public image but the party he/she represent as well.
However, under some certain circumstance, it is necessary for a political leader to withhold information from the public. For one thing, some issues containing national highest secret can not be revealed to anyone, include the people of their own nation. Actually, leaders have the duty to protect this information from being disguised since such information is related to the very confidential matters which would threaten the safety and security of the nation and her people if make it open. For another, some information is just not at an apt time to public to people. The might-be pandemic or some emergency, for example, can always generate panic among the public, and most of the emergency turn out to be non-existed. Under such condition, to public this information can serve only to add psychological and cognitive burden in the public. In short, some information must be hold for the reason that it must be or is simply unnecessary to made public.
In addition, to evaluate a leader is not by if he/she withhold information
from the public. As a matter of fact, a really smart leader knows when to and when not to withhold information as well as what can be and what can not be withhold from the public.
To summarize, honest is always a nice manner no matter who you are and what kind of position you are in. How to deal with the relationship between telling the truth and protecting the interests of most of the people at the same time is an ability of political leader. |
